AUSTIN, Texas – No. 16/16/17 Texas Football sophomore EDGE Colin Simmons earned his fourth Southeastern Conference (SEC) weekly honor of the season, the league office announced Monday. Simmons was named the SEC's Co-Defensive Lineman of the Week.
Simmons complied five tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, one sack, a career-high four pressures and a forced fumble that was returned by a teammate for a 52-yard touchdown in Texas' 52-37 win over Arkansas on Nov. 22. The touchdown provided the Longhorns a 52-23 early in the fourth quarter before the Razorbacks scored a pair of late touchdowns with Simmons and many of the starters out for much of those drives. Simmons' first pressure came on a third down and forced a 51-yard field goal attempt on Arkansas's first drive. He later produced a pressure on a first down in the second quarter that set in motion the first three-and-out of the game. His half tackle for loss came in the third quarter on a second-and-2 to create a third down that resulted in an interception. Just prior to the forced fumble early in the fourth quarter, Simmons had another pressure on third down that forced the fourth down where he generated the sack-fumble that produced the touchdown return. For the year, Simmons now has a team-leading 10 sacks, 12.5 tackles for loss, 12 pressures and three forced fumbles. His .91 sacks per game rank second in the SEC and seventh nationally, while his three forced fumbles are fifth in the SEC and 15th nationally.
The Dallas native leads a UT defense that ranks third in the FBS in sacks (3.36), sixth in 4th down conversion percentage defense (0.333), sixth in opponent yards per rush attempt (2.8), eighth in rushing defense (92.7), 10th in opponent rushing first downs per game (6.1), 11th in opponent red zone scoring attempts per game (2.5), 15th in opponent red zone scores per game (2.1), 17th in opponents points per play (0.281) and 19th in opponent yards per play (4.7).
Up next, Simmons and the Longhorns welcome the No. 3/3/3 Texas A&M Aggies to DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium for the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown at 6:30 p.m. CT Friday, Nov. 28. The game will broadcast on ABC with Sean McDonough, Greg McElroy and Molly McGrath on the call.
