Men's Basketball tops Lafayette 97-60 in home opener

Mark posts a team-high 16 points to lead six Longhorns in double-figure scoring on Saturday.
AUSTIN, Texas — Graduate guard Tramon Mark posted a team-high 16 points to lead Texas (1-1) to a 97-60 victory over Lafayette (1-2) on Saturday afternoon in Moody Center. The win marked the first victory for Sean Miller as head coach of the Longhorns.
Mark paced a total of six Texas players in double-figure scoring during Saturday's win. He converted 5-of-10 field goals and 5-of-6 free throws while adding two assists and two steals in 29 minutes. Sophomore center Matas Vokietaitis recorded his second collegiate double-double with 14 points (7-9 FG) and a game-high 11 rebounds while tying his career high with three blocks in 24 minutes.
Senior guard Chendall Weaver registered 15 points (5-9 FG, 5-6 FT) and eight rebounds (four offensive) in 24 minutes, and junior guard Simeon Wilcher tallied 12 points (4-7 FG, 3-4 threes), two assists and one steal in 23 minutes. Junior guard/forward Dailyn Swain posted 10 points (2-4 threes), nine rebounds (three offensive), six assists and one steal in 25 minutes, and senior guard Jordan Pope added 10 points and six assists in 23 minutes.
After a Shareef Jackson put-back tied the score at 2-2 with 19:15 remaining, the Longhorns used a 15-4 run over the next four-plus minutes to grab a 17-6 advantage following a Nic Codie dunk at the 14:55 mark. The Leopards trimmed the deficit to 17-11 after a Caleb Williams three-pointer with 14:05 left, before Texas went on an 8-1 spurt over the next three minutes to build a 25-12 cushion following a Weaver layup at the 11:00 mark.
Texas increased the margin to 22 points (36-14) after a Mark three-pointer with 7:14 remaining. Lafayette answered with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 36-22 following a Williams three-pointer at the 4:54 mark. The Longhorns grew their advantage to 19 points (45-26) after a pair of Swain free throws with 55 seconds left before taking a 46-28 lead into the break.
Texas upped its cushion to 50-30 following a Pope jumper at the 19:01 mark. The Leopards trimmed the margin to 53-37 after a Jackson layup with 17:36 remaining, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the way.
A pair of Williams free throws brought Lafayette to within 63-44 at the 13:09 mark, before the Longhorns went on a 10-4 run over the next three-plus minutes to build a 73-48 cushion following a Wilcher three-pointer with 10:57 left. The margin grew to over 30 points (84-53) after a Vokietaitis layup at the 5:40 mark, and the Longhorns cruised from there to the final buzzer.
Texas is back in action when it hosts FDU on Wednesday, Nov. 12. Tip is set for 7 p.m. Central in Moody Center, and the game will be streamed nationally on SEC Network+.
