AUSTIN, Texas – No. 14/14/16 Texas Football senior EDGE Ethan Burke was named the Southeastern Conference's Co-Defensive Player of the Week while sophomore offensive lineman Trevor Goosby was selected as the conference's Co-Offensive Lineman of the Week, the league office announced Monday morning. It's the second career weekly honor of Burke's career while it is the first for Goosby.
Burke picked up his first career SEC Defensive Player of the Week honor after earning Co-Defensive Lineman of the Week on Oct. 27.
The duo powered the Longhorns to a 27-17 win over previously unbeaten No. 3/3/3 Texas A&M in the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown on Nov. 28 at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium. With the win, Texas is the only FBS team with three wins over AP Top 10 foes – the most of any FBS team since 2019 LSU. The Longhorns are the only team in the nation with two wins over opponents currently ranked in the CFP Top 10.
Burke collected a career-high nine tackles, including a half tackle for loss, a pass break-up and a blocked field goal in helping Texas to the win. The 17 points for the Aggies were 21 points below their season scoring average of 38.1 that ranked 10th in FBS, while Burke and the UT defense also limited them to 337 total yards, which was 128 below their season average of 465.1, which ranked 15th in the FBS. Burke made the opening defensive tackle of the game for the Longhorns for just two yards, which was part of Texas A&M gaining just 18 yards on their opening possession. He then started the next series with a tackle and pass breakup on first and second down on the way to a three-and-out. Burke posted another set of consecutive impressive plays on the possession after that when, after the Aggies had driven to the Texas 17-line, he produced a one-yard tackle for loss on third down, and followed by blocking the subsequent field goal attempt on fourth down. Later in the second quarter he added tackles for one yard, which helped limit the Aggies to a field goal on their first score, and another for no gain, while in the third quarter he was part of a tackle for no gain on third-and-1 at midfield. Texas A&M then lined up to go for it, but a false start penalty led to a punt, giving Texas the ball back after having just taken a 13-10 lead. Burke leads the team and the SEC with two blocked field goals this season and is now second with seven tackles for loss to go along with three sacks, 40 total tackles and a forced fumble.
Goosby was the highest graded offensive lineman and allowed no sacks and no pressures while helping pave the way for 218 rushing yards and 397 total yards against the nation's 15th-ranked total defense in the victory over Texas A&M. Goosby faced off with the SEC's leader in sacks who was second nationally in Cashius Howell and did not allow either a sack or pressure. As a team, the Aggies entered the game ranking second in sacks per game (3.55), but were only able to register one, while the 218 rushing yards were 100 over the season average allowed by Texas A&M of 118.8, which ranked 27th nationally coming into the game. Running back Quintrevion Wisner accounted for a season-high 155 of those rushing yards on 19 attempts for 8.2 yards per carry with a long of 48 that is tied for the fourth-longest against Texas A&M this season and the longest run by Texas against Texas A&M since Colt McCoy's 65-yard TD in 2009. Wisner became is the third Texas player with multiple 100-yard rushing game against Texas A&M since 2000 with the others being Cedric Benson (2003, 2004) and Cody Johnson (2008, 2009). The line also blocked for a 35-yard rushing touchdown by Arch Manning that helped seal the game and provided the final margin, along with a 29-yard passing touchdown by Manning that was part of 179 yards in the air.
