BATON ROUGE, La. — Graduate forward Kadin Shedrick recorded a double-double with a season-high 16 points and 10 rebounds, while graduate guard Tramon Mark added a season-high 18 points to lead Texas (15-7, 4-5 SEC) to an emphatic 89-58 victory at LSU (12-9, 1-7 SEC) on Saturday evening in the Maravich Assembly Center. The 31-point win marked UT's largest margin of victory in a road conference game since a 31-point victory (83-52) at Texas Tech on Jan. 11, 2011.
Shedrick converted 6-of-11 field goals, including 1-of-2 threes, and 3-of-4 free throws while posting three assists and three steals in 29 minutes. Mark connected on 7-of-12 field goals, including 2-of-4 threes, and 2-of-2 free throws, and added four assists, four boards, one block and one steal in 28 minutes. Freshman Tre Johnson tallied 18 points (7-13 FG, 2-4 threes, 2-2 FT), a career-high five assists, four rebounds and two steals in 30 minutes, and senior Arthur Kaluma recorded 10 points (4-8 FG, 2-4 threes) and five boards in 21 minutes.
The Longhorns, who have now won three of their last four games, set team highs in SEC play in scoring (89 points), field goal percentage (.563), three-point field goal percentage (.476) and assists (20) during the win. Texas, which led 31-25 at the break, posted a 58-33 scoring margin over the final 20 minutes while converting 68.6-percent (24-35) from the floor, including a 6-of-11 (.545) mark from three-point range.
After a Dji Bailey dunk evened the score at 4-4 with 17:20 remaining, the Longhorns used a 10-2 run over the next three minutes to build a 14-6 advantage following a Johnson jumper at the 14:30 mark. LSU trimmed the margin to 16-13 after a Vyctorius Miller three-pointer with 10:22 left, before Texas used an 8-2 spurt over the next two minutes to increase its cushion to 24-15 following a Kaluma three-pointer at the 8:15 mark.
The Tigers cut the deficit to 26-23 after a Robert Miller III put-back with 5:23 remaining, before the Longhorns scored five of the final seven points of the opening half to take a 31-25 advantage into the break. Texas limited LSU to 1-of-10 (.100) shooting from three-point range in the opening 20 minutes.
LSU pulled to within 33-29 following a Corey Chest layup at the 17:53 mark, before the Longhorns went on a 22-6 run over the next six-and-a-half minutes to grab a 55-35 cushion after a Jordan Pope three-pointer with 11:21 remaining. The Tigers narrowed the deficit to 64-46 following a Miller III three-point play at the 8:11 mark, but that was as close as LSU could get for the remainder of the contest. Texas responded with a 17-5 spurt over the next five minutes to increase its advantage to 81-51 after a Devon Pryor put-back with 3:15 left. The margin reached as high as 33 points (89-56) following a Pryor layup with 1:05 remaining.
Texas is back in action when it hosts Arkansas on Wednesday, Feb. 5. Tip is scheduled for 8 p.m. Central at Moody Center, and the contest will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
