Johnson posts a game-high 25 points to pace four Longhorns in double-figure scoring.
AUSTIN, Texas — Freshman guard Tre Johnson recorded a game-high 25 points, but Texas (15-8, 4-6 SEC) dropped a 78-70 decision to Arkansas (14-8, 3-6 SEC) on Wednesday night inside Moody Center. This marked the first matchup played in Austin between the two former Southwest Conference rivals since the 2010-11 season.
Johnson tied his career high in free throws made (10-12) and rebounds (five) while adding four assists against one turnover and two steals in 37 minutes. Senior Arthur Kaluma recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 12 points (6-6 FT) and a game-high 13 rebounds in 33 minutes. Graduate Julian Larry recorded 11 points (5-9 FG) and three assists in 28 minutes, and graduate Kadin Shedrick added 10 points (3-5 FG), eight rebounds and two blocked shots in 19 minutes while battling lower back spasms throughout the contest.
After a Larry jumper tied the game at 6-6 with 15:03 remaining, the Razorbacks used an 11-0 spurt over the next four-plus minutes to build a 17-6 advantage following an Adou Thiero dunk at the 10:51 mark. Texas trimmed the deficit to 24-17 after a Jordan Pope three-pointer with 6:14 left, before Arkansas scored six straight points to take a 30-17 cushion following a Johnell Davis layup at the 3:42 mark. The Longhorns cut the gap to 30-24 after a Larry layup with 2:21 remaining, but the Razorbacks scored the final five points of the half to take a 35-24 lead into the break.
Arkansas opened the second half on a 15-3 run to build a 50-27 cushion following a Zvonimir Ivisic three-pointer at the 14:22 mark. The Razorbacks held a 58-37 advantage after a Davis three-pointer with 11:07 left, before the Longhorns ran off 12 straight points to trim the deficit to 58-49 following a Johnson three-pointer at the 6:05 mark. Texas cut the lead to five points on two occasions within the final minute, but that was as close as the Longhorns could get the rest of the way.
Texas returns to action when it travels to Nashville, Tenn., to face Vanderbilt on Saturday, Feb. 8. Tip is set for Noon CT in historic Memorial Gymnasium, and the game will be televised nationally by SEC Network.
