Atwood, Scott climb program lists as No. 1/1 Softball splits Friday’s action
02.21.2025 | Softball
Reese Atwood, Mia Scott move pass all-time greats during Friday’s Hillenbrand Invitational slate.
TUCSON, Ariz. – There's little Reese Atwood and Mia Scott haven't accomplished during their careers on the Forty Acres and Friday's 9-5 loss to No. 18/20 Stanford and 18-2 win over Colorado State provided more opportunities for the duo to climb several Longhorn career statistical categories.
By appearing in both games for Texas, Mia Scott became the latest student-athlete in program history to not only appear in but start in 200 career softball games. She also inched closer to Janae Jefferson's career runs scored program record (222) when she scored a seventh inning run in the bottom of the seventh against Stanford, marking the 194th career run scored for the fourth-year senior. Scott was also credited with a base hit against the Cardinal, the 237th career hit for the Angleton, Texas native, which moves her two hits shy of tying Lindsay Garner (2000-3) for sixth on the program's all-time hit list.
Additionally, Scott worked a walk against Cardinal pitching, helping her take sole possession of ninth place on the program's career walk list with 85.
Texas' 16-run victory over Colorado State provided Atwood a chance to move into fourth place on the program's career home run list as the junior his two long balls against Ram pitching, pushing her career total to 39 and passing Taylor Thom (2011-14) for fourth place.
Atwood also moved ahead of Taylor Hoagland (2010-13) for fifth place on the Longhorns' carer runs batted in (RBI) list as well following her six-RBI performance across both games on Friday. She'll enter her next game with 154 career RBI, one shy of tying Lexi Bennett (2009-12) for fourth place and just 25 shy of passing Thom for the top spot.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"I thought Stanford came out and swung the bats really well. They took (Cambria Salmon) out of the game, and we responded straight away and got back to 2-2. Teagan (Kavan) came in and they kept the pressure on us and then busted it open with that five run (top of the sixth). We weren't able to respond and hats off to (Stanford). I think they played a little bit more aggressively than we did and we weren't able to dig out of our hole. But it's all about the response and we were able to come back against Colorado State and had some really good at bats and scored a lot of runs and had good pitching from Mac (Morgan).
GAME NOTES
- Texas' 18 runs scored against Colorado State marked the most runs in a single game for the Longhorns since platting 23 against Texas Tech in Lubbock on Saturday, May 4.
- The 18 runs scored versus the Rams were one shy of tying for the fifth most runs scored in a single game in program history.
- With her fourth-inning grand slam, Vanessa Quiroga became the fifth active Longhorn softball student-athlete to hit a grand slam, joining Viviana Martinez, Reese Atwood, Victoria Hunter and Mia Scott.
- By being credited with a base hit in both games on Friday, Ashton Maloney extended her season-opening hitting streak to 13 consecutive games, marking the sixth longest hitting streak – in terms of consecutive games – and the longest by a Longhorn student-athlete to begin a season.
- With her one-out infield single in the bottom of the seventh against Stanford, Leighann Goode (101) joins Mia Scott (237), Reese Atwood (146) and Ashton Maloney (138) as the only active Longhorn softball student-athletes with 100-or-more career hits.
- Katie Cimusz (93) and Kayden Henry (89) will likely join the list over the coming games.
- By earning the win in the five-inning contest against Colorado State, Mac Morgan (2023-P) moves into a three-way tie with Shea O'Leary (2019-22) and Amy Bradford (2002-05) for seventh place on the program's career wins list with 37.
