Ashton Maloney, Teagan Kavan, Katie Stewart all honored for performances against Auburn
AUSTIN, Texas – Following a weekend that saw The University of Texas softball program earn its first-ever three-game sweep of a SEC series, Ashton Maloney, Teagan Kavan and Katie Stewart were all recognized for their productivity versus the Tigers.
Maloney became the first Texas softball student-athlete to be named the SEC's Player of the Week after the redshirt-junior outfielder hit .833, scored three runs and drove in three runs. In three games against Auburn, the Liberty, Mo., native failed to reach base just one time against six different Tiger pitchers in 15 offensive innings on the weekend. She was credited with five hits in six official trips to the plate, while also earning two walks, stealing a base and being credited with a sacrifice fly and hit. Maloney had a hit in the bottom of the first inning of all three games against Auburn.
After being named the NFCA's Pitcher of the Week last week, Kavan was selected as D1Softball's Pitcher of the Week after earning the win in all three conference games against Auburn. She became the first Texas pitcher under seventh-year head coach Mike White to earn a win in all three games of a three-game conference series sweep. Additionally, she became the first Longhorn pitcher since Blaire Luna in 2013 to accomplish the feat. To cap the weekend, Kavan recorded her fifth career – and fourth this season – double-digit strikeout performance when she struck out 10 in just five innings of work.
Stewart was named as one of four Softball America's Stars of the Week as the sophomore totaled four hits in seven at bats in three games against Auburn. For the weekend, she drove in nine runs, scored five times and drew a walk. But the biggest moment for the Illinois native occurred in the closing moments of Saturday's game as the second-year Longhorn blasted the first pitch of her seventh inning at bat for a game-ending three-run home run to clinch the second consecutive SEC series for the Longhorns.
