The final day of the Longhorn Invite was highlighted by Texas’ victory in the II Four.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 1 Texas Rowing concluded the 2025 Longhorn Invite at Lake Walter E. Long on Saturday morning, highlighted by a compelling victory by the Longhorn Second Four.
"In some respects today was terrific, and in others, there is plenty of work to be done," Texas head coach Dave O'Neill said. "Starting with the not-so good, Stanford got the best of us, and they have a formidable team. All of our crews felt like they rowed pretty well, but we simply got beat. I expected Stanford to be fast, and they have definitely set the standard for all of us to match this year."
"The event itself [Longhorn Invite] was fantastic. I really appreciate all of the work our staff put in, especially Rachel Sander and Spencer Kales. Cody Jones and his staff with Texas Athletics event management were awesome, and Caten Hyde did great work, as always. I fully believe rowing is a spectator-friendly event, but there needs to be some effort put into it."
Friday night's weather altered Saturday's schedule slightly with the Texas Third Varsity Eight squads kicking off the final day vying for spots in the III Eight finals. In Heat 1 of the III Eight, Texas' A crew had a convincing victory over SMU, winning in a whopping 6:59.153. The Mustangs followed after clocking in at 7:21.441. The UT B crew put up a fight to finish runner-up to Stanford in Heat 2. The Cardinal finished in front in 6:52.525 with Texas finishing next in 7:04.685 followed by Oklahoma (7:26.739). Both Texas crews advanced to the III Eight final with the A crew finishing second in 7:11.628 and the B crew placing third in 7:15.068. Stanford won the race in 7:02.136.
The Texas Second Varsity Four won by open-water in 7:31.774, taking down runner-up Stanford (7:39.100) and third-place UCF (8:02.412) to highlight Saturday's racing. The Longhorns jumped to an early lead and steadily increased it throughout the 2,000 meter course for the potent dub.
In the next race, Texas' I Four put up a hard-fought battle with Stanford but ultimately finished runner-up to the Cardinal in 7:40.409. Stanford recorded a final time of 7:34.005 in its victory.
Texas' II Eight never surrendered and chipped away at Stanford's lead but came up just short after finishing in 6:51.012. The Cardinal, who won the race, posted a final time of 6:44.518.
The Longhorn Invite's First Varsity Eight race drew the most attention with No. 1 Texas, No. 2 Stanford and the Canadian National Team squaring off. The Canadian National Team's Eight, regarded as one of the world's premier rowing crews, took home a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games in August. The race was neck and neck and came down-to-the-wire with Stanford winning in 6:32.659, Texas tallying the runner-up finish in 6:38.091 and Canada registering a final time of 6:50.255 to place third to cap an exciting 2025 Longhorn Invite.
Up next, Texas heads east to Oak Ridge, Tenn., on May 11 for the 2025 SEC Championship. The Longhorns will compete against No. 5 Tennessee, No. 22 Oklahoma and Alabama.
