Longhorns hold opponent under 100 yards rushing for fourth straight game.
AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas defense held UTEP to 50 rushing yards, its fourth straight game limiting an opponent to under 100, while forcing two interceptions and recording two sacks in a 27-10 victory over the Miners on Saturday at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
Quarterback Arch Manning totaled 166 yards, rushing for two touchdowns and adding a passing score to wide receiver Ryan Wingo. Four Longhorns rushed for at least 30 yards in the same game — James Simon (67), Jerrick Gibson (64), Manning (51) and Christian Clark (32) — marking the first time Texas has accomplished the feat since Nov. 24, 2023, against Texas Tech.
On UTEP's opening drive, the Texas defense held the Miners without a first down. It marked the eighth time since the start of the 2024-25 season that the Longhorns have prevented their opponent from moving the chains on their first possession.
On their second drive of the game, Manning ran the ball in from UTEP's 2-yard line for his 20th career touchdown 14 passing/6 rushing. The run marked the first score of the game and put Texas ahead 7-0 with 5:25 remaining in the first quarter.
During the second quarter, defensive back Jelani McDonald recorded his second career interception. Texas has now forced at least one turnover in 19 straight home games, the longest active streak in FBS and the program's longest since a 24-game run from 1999-2003.
On the final play of the half, Manning scrambled up the middle for a five-yard touchdown, his second rushing score of the game, to extend Texas' lead to 14-3. Dating back to last week's win over San José State, Manning is the first Texas quarterback to rush for two touchdowns in the first half of a game since Sam Ehlinger vs. Oklahoma (10/10/2020)
On Texas' first drive of the second half, kicker Mason Shipley converted a 31-yard field goal, his second as a Longhorn, to push the lead to 17-3 with 7:50 left in the third quarter. Just over a minute later, defensive back Graceson Littleton recorded his first career interception, and Shipley followed with his second field goal of the day from 30 yards to extend the Longhorns' advantage to 20-3.
At the 10:52 mark of the fourth quarter, Manning connected with wide receiver Ryan Wingo for a four-yard touchdown, extending Texas' lead to 27-3. The score marked Wingo's first touchdown reception of the season.
Texas ran out the clock to seal a 27-10 victory over UTEP.
Up next, Texas will host Sam Houston at 7:00 p.m. CT on Sept. 20 at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. The game will be televised on ESPN+/SEC Network+.
