The Longhorns won the doubles point and at No. 1 singles before the Demon Deacons put together four singles wins.
Austin – No. 4 Texas Men's Tennis was downed by No. 1 Wake Forest, 4-2, on Wednesday at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center in the Longhorns' second-straight match against a top-five opponent.
Texas took the doubles point with wins at Nos. 3 and 1 and followed with a top-15 victory by senior No. 39 Sebastian Gorzny at No. 1 for a 2-0 lead, but the Demon Deacons put together four singles wins at Nos. 2, 3, 5 and 4.
Gorzny and freshman Lucas Marionneau opened doubles with an efficient 6-1 win over Luca Pow and Mees Rottgering at No. 3. Wake Forest then squared doubles as junior Lucas Brown and senior Jonah Braswell fell to Aryan Shah and Kacper Szymkowiak, 6-2, at No. 2. That left it to No. 1 where freshmen Kalin Ivanovski and Abel Forger clinched the point with a 6-3 victory over DK Suresh Ekambaram and Charlie Robertson.
Gorzny then extended the lead with an impressive 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 12 Suresh. However, Ivanovski and Forger both fell by 6-4, 6-3 scores to Shah at No. 2 and No. 15 Pow at No. 3, respectively, to tie the overall match. Wake Forest took the lead when Braswell fell to Robertson, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 5, and clinched the match as sophomore No. 25 Sebastian Eriksson came up just short in a second-set tiebreaker to Rottgering at No. 4, 6-3, 7-6 (3).
The teams had played just five courts to allow for extra attendance, so freshman Mariano Dedura-Palomero began play on court 1 after Gorzny, but was trailing, No. 63 Joaquin Guilleme, 5-1, when play stopped.
The Longhorns return to the court starting Friday for the ITA Kickoff Weekend when they'll face UNC Wilmington in the opening round at 12 p.m. CT. The schedule may be impacted by inclement weather, but updates will be posted on TexasSports.com and on social media at @TexasMTN on X and Instagram.
