No. 4 Men’s Tennis sweeps UNC Wilmington in ITA Kickoff First Round

The Longhorns earned a 4-0 win on Friday to advance to the regional championship match.
Austin – No. 4 Texas Men's Tennis earned the first victory in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend tournament, sweeping UNC Wilmington, 4-0, at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center on Friday.
After claiming the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 3, the Longhorns followed with singles wins from senior No. 39 Sebastian Gorzny at No. 1, junior Lucas Brown at No. 3, and freshman Mariano Dedura-Palomero at No. 5 for the clinch.
In doubles, the Longhorns were off the court first with a 6-2 win from Gorzny and freshman Lucas Marionneau over Alex de Gabriele and Jordi Domenech. The Seahawks came back at No. 2, as Lukas Steffan and Wiliam Dean of UNCW downed senior Jonah Braswell and freshman Abel Forger, 6-3. That sent it to the deciding match at No. 3, where sophomores Sebastian Eriksson and Evan Burnett clinched the point with another 6-3 win over Brady Hussey and Martin Mazef.
Gorzny kicked off the singles sweep for the Longhorns with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Domenech at No. 1. Then it was junior Lucas Brown, in his season debut in singles play, defeating de Gabriele, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 3 to extend the lead to 3-0. Dedura-Palomero followed by clinching the overall team victory at No. 5 with his 6-1, 6-2 win over Hussey.
Despite dropping one set in doubles play, Texas did not lose any singles sets. When the Longhorns clinched the win, Forger was up on Steffan, 6-2, 4-3, at No. 2, Marionneau led Oscar Baumgartner, 6-2, 3-4, at No. 4, and Burnett held a 6-2, 3-1 lead over Thomas Marin at No. 6.
The Longhorns will next face South Florida in the championship match on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. CT at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center.

UNC Wilmington began with a deuce-point hold and had another for a 3-2 lead before earning the only break of the match for a 5-3 advantage. Three of the Longhorns' game losses came at deuce.

Both teams picked up deuce-point breaks, with Texas taking theirs for a 3-1 lead and UNCW using theirs to get back on serve and trail 4-3. Texas broke back again for a 5-3 lead before serving it out.

First Set: Domenech earned his only game on a deuce-point hold for 1-1 before Gorzny finished on a 5-0 run.
Second Set: Gorzny collected the only breaks, first for a 2-1 lead on a deuce point, and then for 5-2 before serving it out.

First Set: Brown swept the set, including deuce-point breaks for 1-0 and 5-0.
Second Set: Brown began with a 4-0 run, including the last two at deuce, to complete a 10-0 run from the start of the match on the way to the 6-2 win.
Singles No. 5: Dedura-Palomero (TEX) def. Hussey (UNCW) 6-0, 6-2
First Set: Dedura-Palomero swept the first set on the way to winning the first eight games of the match.
Second Set: Dedura-Palomero broke in the opening game and again on a deuce point for a 4-1 lead. Hussey broke back on a deuce point, but Dedura-Palomero took the last two games.
Singles No. 2: Forger (TEX) vs. Steffan (UNCW) 6-2, 4-3
First Set: Forger started on a 3-0 run including a deuce-point break and later broke again for the set.
Second Set: The second set was on serve until play stopped.
Singles No. 4: Marionneau (TEX) vs. Baumgartner (UNCW) 6-2, 3-4
First Set: Marionneau broke in the opening game and again for 4-1 and surrendered only two deuce-point holds in the set.
