In a second-straight match for Texas that moved indoors, the Longhorns won four singles contests to complete their SEC opening road trip, 3-0.
Columbia, S.C. – No. 4 Texas Men's Tennis secured a 4-2 victory at No. 22 South Carolina to complete their opening SEC road trip with a 3-0 record. It was the Longhorns' second-straight match to go indoors, although this time the move happened after most singles first sets were complete.
Texas started out coming up just short in the doubles point after a 7-5 loss in the deciding match at No. 2. Texas had claimed an efficient 6-1 win at No. 3 to start, but South Carolina answered with a 6-4 win at No. 1. The Longhorns followed with singles victories by freshman No. 67 Abel Forger at No. 4, sophomore Oliver Ojakaar at No. 6, and sophomore No. 40 Sebastian Eriksson at No. 3 to extend to a 3-1 lead. The Gamecocks picked up another point at No. 1, but senior Jonah Braswell clinched the match at No. 5.
After doubles, Forger was first off the court with a decisive 6-2, 6-2 win over Atakan Karahan at No. 4 to even the overall match. Ojakaar then provided Texas the lead, which they would keep the rest of the match, with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Charlie Swaine at No. 6.
Eriksson picked up a ranked win in straight sets by claiming a second-set tiebreaker over No. 70 Paul Barbier Gazeu, 6-2, 7-6 (6). Although senior No. 3 Sebastian Gorzny had his nine-match singles win streak stopped by No. 44 Lucas da Silva in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1, Braswell came through with three-set victory of his own over Gabe Avram, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, at No. 5 for the clinch. That left one match unfinished at No. 2 where freshman No. 25 Kalin Ivanovski was leading No. 51 Sean Daryabeigi, 7-6 (6), 6-7 (5), 4-3, at No. 2.
Doubles began with the No. 12 duo of Ojakaar and Eriksson defeating Karahan and Cole Henceroth, 6-1, at No. 3. After the No. 28 pair of da Silva and Barbier Gazeu downed No. 25 Gorzny and freshman Lucas Marionneau, 6-4, at No. 1, Ivanovski and Forger came up just short against No. 86 Daryabeigi and Max Stenzer, 7-5, at No. 2.
The Longhorns will next return home to face No. 13 Georgia on Sunday, March 1, at 1 p.m. CT at the Texas Tennis Center.
