Vokietaitis records a game-high 27 points during Saturday’s home win.
AUSTIN, Texas — Sophomore center Matas Vokietaitis posted a game-high 27 points to lead Texas (15-9, 6-5 SEC) to a 79-68 victory over Ole Miss (11-12, 3-7 SEC) in Moody Center on Saturday afternoon. This marked the first time since the Longhorns joined the SEC prior to the start of the 2024-25 season that Texas has recorded three consecutive league victories.
Vokietaitis converted 9-of-11 field goals (tying his career high) and hit 9-of-12 free throws while adding seven rebounds in a career-best 35 minutes. His 27 points were one shy of his career high, as he previously had 28 against Southern on Dec. 8. Graduate Tramon Mark posted 19 points (8-14 FG, 2-2 FT), five rebounds and four assists against just one turnover in 35 minutes, while senior Jordan Pope tallied 13 points (6-6 FT) in 21 minutes.
Ole Miss opened the scoring with a three-pointer by Augusto Cassia at the 19:04 mark, before the Longhorns went on an 11-1 run over the next three minutes to grab an 11-4 advantage following three free throws from Pope with 16:07 left. The Rebels answered with five-straight points to trim the lead to 11-9 after a pair of Kezza Giffa free throws at the 14:28 mark.
Ole Miss cut the deficit to 13-11 following an A.J. Storr jumper with 12:52 remaining, before Texas went on a 16-0 run over the next five-and-a-half minutes to build a 29-11 cushion after a Mark jumper at the 7:21 mark. A Dailyn Swain jumper gave the Longhorns a 33-16 advantage with 3:25 left, but the Rebels closed the half on a 9-4 spurt to pull to within 37-25 at the break.
Ole Miss started the second half by going 9-for-9 from the floor over the opening eight minutes and took a 47-45 lead following an Eduardo Klafke three-pointer at the 12:12 mark. A Vokietaitis layup gave the Longhorns a 55-52 advantage with 9:10 remaining, but the Rebels answered with six-consecutive points to grab a 58-55 cushion after a Koren Johnson layup at the 7:51 mark.
Ole Miss took a 68-65 advantage after an Ilias Kamardine three-pointer with 3:35 left, but that would mark the final lead of the game for the Rebels. Texas responded with a Pope four-point play, a Swain three-point play after a big-time offensive board and a Simeon Wilcher three-pointer with the shot clock running down to build a 75-68 cushion with 41 seconds remaining. The Longhorns held Ole Miss scoreless for the remainder of the contest and went 4-of-4 from the free throw line in the final 29 seconds to close out the scoring.
Texas has a mid-week bye before returning to action when it travels to face Missouri on Saturday, Feb. 14. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m. Central in Mizzou Arena, and the game will be televised nationally by either ESPN or ESPN2.
