The match came down to late in the third set of the deciding singles match, but the Longhorns came up just short.
Austin – No. 2 Texas Men's Tennis came up just short to No. 6 LSU, 4-3, at the Texas Tennis Center on Friday. The match came down to late in the third set of the deciding singles match despite the Longhorns being forced into a number of lineup changes due to injuries.
Two of those changes came in doubles where freshman Kalin Ivanovski and sophomore Oliver Ojakaar were both out, resulting in two of the three doubles pairs being combinations that had not played together before.
LSU went on to take both of those as senior Jonah Braswell and sophomore Sebastian Eriksson fell to Enzo Kohlman and Olaf Pieczkowski, 6-4, at No. 3, and the freshman pair of Abel Forger and Mariano Dedura-Palomero were downed in a tiebreaker to No. 59 Matias Ponce De Leon and Erik Arutiunian, 7-6 (4), at No. 2. Texas was then leading, 6-5, at No. 1 with the No. 13 duo of senior Sebastian Gorzny and freshman Lucas Marionneau ahead against No. 66 Sasa Markovic and Andrej Loncarevic when play stopped.
The teams alternated points throughout singles as Marionneau was first off the court with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Matias Ponce De Leon to even it at 1-1. LSU then won at No. 2 as No. 20 Ivanovski played his singles match but was not able to overcome No. 54 Erik Arutiunian, 6-2, 6-4.
Braswell knotted it again, 2-2, with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Markovic at No. 5, but a short time later No. 65 Forger, who also had medical issues during his second set, fell to Alessio Vasquez, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 4.
No. 37 Eriksson answered one more time with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win over No. 117 Loncarevic at No. 3 for 3-3 overall, and although No. 4 Gorzny had taken leads of 4-1 and 5-2 in his third set against Pieczkowski, Pieczkowski closed on a 5-0 run to clinch for LSU.
The Longhorns (13-4, 4-1 SEC) will turn around and be back on the court against another top-seven opponent in No. 7 TCU on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT at the Texas Tennis Center.
