Austin – No. 2 Texas Men's Tennis fell to No. 7 TCU, 4-1, in a match that was moved indoors to the Weller Indoor Tennis Center on Saturday.
The Longhorns, who were again without freshman No. 20 Kalin Ivanovski and sophomore Oliver Ojakaar in the lineup, won five first sets in singles, had second-set tiebreaker chances in three of those for a path to win the match and held leads on the last two courts but came up just short.
After TCU took the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2, senior Jonah Braswell evened the overall match with a singles win at No. 4, however the Horned Frogs then won at Nos. 6, 5 and 2 to clinch. Texas had third-set leads on Nos. 1 and 3 when play stopped.
After doubles, Braswell's victory came over Albert Pedrico, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 4. Along with the other second-set tiebreakers that had come after first set wins, freshman Mariano Dedura-Palomero also had one needing to win it to force a third set, and although he pushed it the distance, ultimately fell 6-0, 7-6 (8) to Roger Pascual at No. 6.
Freshman Lucas Marionneau had gone three sets after winning his first, but was downed 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 by Oliver Bonding at No. 5 for a 3-1 lead for TCU. The clinch then came at No. 2 where sophomore No. 37 Sebastian Eriksson had been up a set and 5-1 with match points in the next game, but No. 9 Duncan Chan fended those off and came back to take the set in a tiebreaker and win the third set, 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
On the remaining courts, senior No. 4 Sebastian Gorzny led No. 36 Cosme Rolland De Ravel, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 2-1, while freshman No. 65 Abel Forger led No. 41 Cooper Woestendick, 6-4, 6-7 (2), 4-3, at No. 2.
Earlier in doubles, the No. 13 pair of Gorzny and Marionneau were downed by No. 8 Chan and Rolland De Ravel, 6-2 at No. 1. Forger and Eriksson then partnered at No. 2 but were defeated by Woestendick and Pedrico, 6-4, to clinch the point. In the remaining match at No. 3, Braswell and sophomore Evan Burnett were trailing, 4-5, but on serve against Bonding and Maximus Dussault when play halted.
The Longhorns (13-5, 4-1 SEC) will return to the court to host the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown against No. 18 Texas A&M on Friday, March 13, at 6 p.m. CT.
