GREENVILLE, S.C. – The No. 4 Texas Women's Basketball team earned a dominant 78-61 win over the No. 1 seed and defending SEC Tournament champion South Carolina in the final of SEC Tournament. The Longhorns won their first SEC Tournament championship since joining the conference.
Texas (31-3) saw three players that registered double digits in the win. Madison Booker put up a game-high 18 points along with four rebounds and two assists. Justice Carlton ended the night with 15 points and went 6-for-8 from the field. Sophomore Jordan Lee added 12 points and made both her three-point attempts. The Longhorns scored 51 percent of their points from the paint (40) and grabbed 35 rebounds.
The Longhorns started with a 14-0 run to start the game in the first 3:24. Justice Carlton added six points in the run. Texas forced the Gamecocks to give up five turnovers in the span. Carlton ended the first quarter with match-leading 13 points while shooting 6-for-7. Breya Cunningham and Carlton combined 19 points for the Longhorns in the opening quarter.
Texas went on a 10-0 run over 2:15 in the second quarter to extend the lead 19 points over South Carolina. The Longhorns ended the first half with a 17-point lead over South Carolina. Freshman Aaliyah Crump put up seven points and three rebounds in the second quarter. Texas defense forced ten turnovers and scored 14 points off them and held a 18-12 advantage in rebounds and scored 26 points in the paint.
Madison Booker led the team with 14 points in the second half and shot 6-for-11 from the field. Jordan Lee finished the second half by adding seven points and shot 60 percent. The Longhorns defense did not allow South Carolina to score three-pointers in the final half of the match.
Up next the Longhorns will wait for their seeding on Selection Sunday on March 15.
