No. 1/1 Football’s Goosby named Capital One Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award nominee

The senior offensive lineman was named the Outland Trophy’s National Player of the Week and the SEC’s Co-Offensive Lineman of the Week following Texas’ win over No. 1/1 Ohio State.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 1/1 Texas Football senior offensive lineman Trevor Goosby is this week's nominee for the 2026 Capital One Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award, the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) announced Wednesday.
Earlier this week, Goosby was named the Outland Trophy's National Player of the Week and the SEC's Co-Offensive Lineman of the Week.
Goosby, a fourth-year left tackle, has overcome open-heart surgery as a teenager, along with multiple other injuries, to become a leader for the now top-ranked Longhorns.
Goosby underwent open-heart surgery as a 16-year-old after doctors noticed a heart murmur during a physical for athletes who had previously had COVID-19. Further testing uncovered Atrium Septal Defect, a birth condition in which a hole separates the heart's upper chambers. Goosby had previously shown no known signs of the condition outside of fatigue during basketball games.
At SEC Media Days in Tampa, Fla., this summer, Goosby wore a pin lapel that said "Every 15 minutes," calling attention to the fact that a child is born with a heart condition every 15 minutes in America. Goosby held a camp that benefitted The Children's Heart Foundation (CHF), the nation's leading organization dedicated solely to funding research on congenital heart defects, in July 2026. As part of the initiative, Goosby personally matched donations made to The Children's Heart Foundation through the campaign.
Goosby powered Texas to its first 20-plus-point comeback in the fourth quarter against a No. 1 team in 22 years in Texas' 24-23 win over No. 1/1 Ohio State at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium on Sept. 12. It was the second-largest fourth-quarter comeback and the fourth-largest overall comeback in program history. The Longhorns moved to 2-0 and captured their 11th-consecutive victory at home, including their fourth-straight win at home against a ranked opponent, which leads the nation.
Goosby was the top-graded offensive lineman and allowed no sacks and just one pressure on 46 pass blocks against Ohio State. The Longhorns' offense manufactured three-consecutive touchdown drives to end the game. Goosby's impact was most important in the fourth quarter, as each of the Longhorns' three-consecutive touchdown drives to end the game took at least 12 plays and covered at least 72 yards to overcome a 23-3 deficit. The first two drives (15 and 13 plays) included clutch fourth-down conversions in Texas territory to keep the rally alive.
In the fourth quarter alone, Goosby and the offensive line helped the Longhorns compile 150 yards of total offense – 83 passing and 67 rushing – in outgaining the Buckeyes, 150-52. Including the final drive of the third quarter, Texas totaled 236 total yards in the last 21 minutes of the game. The Longhorns became the only team in the past 15 years to close a victory with three-straight touchdown drives of 12 or more plays.
The win was the third-largest comeback win by any FBS team against an AP No. 1 team this century, while Texas became the first non-conference opponent this century to score 21-plus points in the fourth quarter against Ohio State.
The Courage Award was first presented by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) in 2002. A select group of writers from the FWAA vote on the winner each year. The requirements for nomination include displaying courage on or off the field, including overcoming an injury or physical handicap, preventing a disaster or living through hardship. The winner of the award will be included in festivities during Capital One Orange Bowl week and receive his trophy at an on-field presentation.
The Longhorns are back in action at 7 p.m. CT Saturday, Sept. 19, against the UTSA Roadrunners at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium. The game will stream on SEC Network+ with Clay Matvick (play-by-play), Rocky Boiman (analyst) and Austyn Iven (reporter) on the call.
