Longhorns record 40th straight win over non-conference team
AUSTIN, Texas — Behind a strong defensive performance, No. 1/1 Texas dominated UTSA, 30-6, in front of 103,753 fans at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday night.
The Longhorns contained the Roadrunners (2-1) to only 143 total yards. Texas (3-0) became the first team to hold UTSA without a touchdown for the first time since Oct. 31, 2020.
The Roadrunners had found the end zone at least once in 74 consecutive games coming into Saturday's showdown. Entering the evening, UTSA had scored 20-plus points in 23 of its last 25 contests.
Over the Roadrunners' last nine drives, Texas limited the visitors to 84 yards, with eight possessions ending with punts. During that stretch, UTSA went 0-for-9 on third downs.
The Longhorns' defense set the tone from the jump, as senior linebacker Rasheem Biles picked off a pass from quarterback Owen McCowen on the first play of the game. Biles' interception marked the Longhorns' first takeaway on the opening play from scrimmage in more than eight years.
With the pick, Texas has forced a turnover in 26 straight home games, the longest active streak in the FBS.
Biles' fifth career interception gave Arch Manning and the Longhorns a short field, as Texas took over on the 37-yard line. Manning capped off a 4-play, 1-minute and 17-second drive by connecting with Cam Coleman. Manning also linked up with Coleman for a 3-yard score to pad the lead, 17-3, early in the second quarter.
The senior signal caller finished 211 yards of total offense and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, Coleman posted a team-high four receptions for 59 yards and two scores.
The Longhorns rushed for 228 yards with four different ball carriers mounting at least 40 yards on the ground. Hollywood Smothers ran for a team-best 54 yards, while Derek Cooper Jr. added 44 yards and his first career touchdown.
As a team, Texas outgained UTSA, 397-143.
Kicker Gianni Spetic matched a career-high three field goals made. Spetic delivered a 52-yard field goal in the opening frame, matching the third-longest of his career. The 6-foot-3 standout has converted seven of his last eight attempts from at least 50 yards. Spetic also registered a 37-yard field goal and a 23-yard chip shot.
With the victory, Texas has won 40 straight non-conference games against teams from the Lone Star State, dating back to 1968. The Longhorns are now 24-1 (.960) at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium since 2023.
Up next, Texas will travel to face No. 14/15 Tennessee on Sept. 26. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. at Neyland Stadium and will be televised on ABC.
