No. 1/1 Football’s Kanu named NFF Campbell Trophy semifinalist

The fifth-year defensive lineman was named a semifinalist for the National Football Foundation’s prestigious award, which honors individuals who exemplify academic success, football achievement, and exemplary leadership.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 1/1 Texas Football fifth-year defensive lineman Hero Kanu was named a semifinalist for the 2026 William V. Campbell Trophy, the National Football Foundation (NFF) announced Wednesday. Celebrating its 37th year, the Campbell Trophy is a scholar-athlete award that annually recognizes an individual as the absolute best in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership.
Texas has had back-to-back finalists for the Campbell Trophy as former Longhorn linebacker Trey Moore was selected as a finalist in 2025 and former center Jake Majors was named a finalist in 2024. Texas has had two previous winners of the Campbell Trophy in center Dallas Griffin (2007) and defensive end Sam Acho (2010).
"Hero is an incredible team leader, an awesome teammate and an all-around tremendous student-athlete who we can count on to bring his best to everything he does, every single day," Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said. "Who he is some of the time is who he is all of the time, and we love that about him. He's as dedicated in the classroom and to his education at Texas as he is as a football player, and he does both at an exceptionally high level. He's a great story of determination, has an amazing attitude and work ethic and sets a great example for all of his teammates. We're extremely proud to have him as our nominee for NFF Scholar Athlete and the William V. Campbell Trophy and certainly feel strongly that he's worthy of that recognition."
Kanu will graduate in December 2026 with a Communication & Leadership degree and holds a 3.42 cumulative GPA. The Geltendorf, Germany, native was selected to the 2025-26 SEC Academic Honor Roll and was a 2025 member of the Texas Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Over the past two years, Kanu has hosted eight free football camps in Germany and France to inspire young people ranging from six-year-olds to young adults, teaching them the game of American football as well as the discipline, dedication and work ethic necessary to succeed as student-athletes, with the hope they can one day follow in his footsteps and earn a college scholarship. Inspired by the Kicks for Kids program, he donated more than 100 pairs of shoes to local children in need and participated in promotional efforts to raise awareness to the charitable initiative. Kanu has volunteered at the Boys & Girls Club of Austin through Longhorn great and board member Jamaal Charles and served as a celebrity waiter at an event supporting College Football Hall of Famer Derrick Johnson's Defend the Dream Foundation, which provides low-income and inner-city youth with the opportunities and resources to reach their full potential in school and in life. Kanu has sponsored two aspiring student-athletes - one from Germany and one from Nigeria - on trips to America to attend college camps and pursue their athletic and educational dreams, just like he did. Kanu helps support club teams in Germany by providing access to minivans for travel to 9U and 11U flag football games across the country. In support of a UT student organization, Kanu provided free ice cream to students for two hours on campus to help raise awareness for the group and its community activities. Kanu is passionate about growing the game of American football and expanding flag football for opportunities boys and girls around the world.
Kanu grew up in Geltendorf, Germany, a small community of just over 1,000 residents less than one hour west of Munich. His favorite sport growing up was soccer, where he played goalkeeper and center back at a high-level from age six to 16. As he continued to grow, Kanu eventually became too big for soccer and began transitioning to football. Kanu was first introduced to American football as a 15-year-old in Germany in 2019 by Brandon Collier, a former college football player who founded the international scouting and training organization Premier Prospects International (PPI). Kanu trained with Collier and PPI before taking a huge leap toward pursuing his football dreams and moving to California in October 2020 as a high school junior. Kanu spoke broken English, had never played organized football and left his family and friends behind in Germany for the opportunity to eventually play college football in America. Kanu played organized football for the first time in the spring of 2021. His parents and siblings have been extremely supportive of his decision to leave home and chase his dream playing football in America. When he first arrived in the U.S., he lived with a host family in Ladera Ranch, Calif., -Seana and Michael Pierce and their son, Evan - and remains very close with them today.
Kanu is a second-year player who has played in 16 games with 15 starts across two seasons at Texas after transferring from Ohio State in spring 2025. Prior to the 2026 season, Kanu garnered preseason Fourth-Team All-America and Second-Team All-SEC honors from Phil Steele. In three starts this season, Kanu has compiled six tackles (four solo), 2.5 tackles for loss, two quarterback hurries and one pass break-up. His 2.5 tackles for loss and two quarterback hurries rank second on the team.
Kanu and the Longhorns open SEC play on the road at No. 14/13 Tennessee at 11 a.m. CT Saturday, Sept. 26, at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn. The game will broadcast on ABC with Chris Fowler (play-by-play), Kirk Herbstreit (analyst) and Holly Rowe (reporter) on the call.
