LaKale (Luh-KALE) Malone brings more than a decade of women's basketball coaching experience into her fifth season as an assistant to Gail Goestenkors and the Texas Longhorns. Malone joined Goestenkors' inaugural staff on the Forty Acres in 2007.
At Texas, Malone's name has become synonymous with player development. Under three years of guidance from Malone, Brittainey Raven was selected No. 33 in the 2010 WNBA Draft by Atlanta following her third-straight All-Big 12 Second Team honor. Additionally, Malone has helped develop five players into All-Big 12 honorees during her stint at Texas.
While conveying her talents onto the court, Malone has also displayed a prowess for recruiting success by assisting with the recruiting process and eventual signing of five McDonald's All-Americans in as many seasons at UT.
Malone served as an assistant coach at the University of Nebraska from 2003-07 and recruiting coordinator from 2005-07. She was an integral piece in the rebuilding of the Nebraska program that went on to win the Big 12 Conference title in 2009-10 and record the first perfect season in league history. Malone was instrumental in the recruitment of high school All-Americans Yvonne Turner and Cory Montgomery, who both went on to become All-Big 12 performers, as well as 2010 All-American and WNBA player Kelsey Griffin.
In Malone's final season on the Nebraska sideline in 2006-07, the Huskers produced a 22-10 overall record and 10-6 Big 12 record to earn an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament. Nebraska made four-straight postseason appearances during Malone's tenure for the first time in school history, including WNIT Tournament berths in 2004, 2005 and 2006. Malone also earned her Master's Degree in Educational Administration while at Nebraska.
Prior to Nebraska, Malone was an assistant coach at Bradley University (2001-03) and Wagner College (2000-01). In addition to on-floor coaching at Bradley, she handled scouting reports and coordinated summer camps.
Malone was a team member of Sports Reach, an organization aims to reach and teach the world through athletics. She competed in Israel in the summer of 2000 and toured with the team in Tunsia, Africa prior to her arrival at Bradley in the summer of 2001.
A native of Mufreesboro, Tenn., Malone was a four-year letterwinner at Indiana University (1994-99) and received her bachelor's degree in Accounting and Marketing. Upon graduation, Malone worked as an auditor for PriceWaterhouseCoopers LLP in Nashville, Tenn., for one year, before returning to her lifelong passion -- the game of basketball.
