After his first three seasons that saw Texas win back-to-back Big 12 Soccer Tournament Championships (2006-07), Matthew Mott returns for a Fourth season on the Forty Acres.
Mott's work with the goalkeepers shone during his first three seasons on the Forty Acres as UT shattered the school record for lowest goals against average (0.64) in 2008 and posted three-straight seasons of double-digit shutouts including the single season mark of 11 reached in 2008. Under his tutelage, Diana Pfenninger took over the top two spots in many of the career and season individual records.. The 2007 Big 12 Tournament Offensive MVP set the single season record for wins (16), lowest goals against average (0.64) and shutouts (9) in each of the last three seasons.
Mott joined UT in the summer of 2006 after spending seven years on the Auburn women's soccer coaching staff. Mott served the Tigers not only as an assistant (1999-2000), but as the assistant head coach (2001-03) and the associate head coach (2004-05) under head coach Karen Hoppa. His main responsibilities over those seven seasons included serving as recruiting coordinator as well as scouting coordinator, serving as the director of the Auburn Soccer Camps and assisting the head coach with all on-field coaching.
During his time at Auburn, he helped the Tigers amass 82 wins over seven seasons (for an average of 12 wins per year) and reach the NCAA Tournament for the first four times in school history (2001-04) which included three consecutive second-round appearances (2002-04). Additionally, he aided Auburn in winning the 2002 Southeastern Conference (SEC) Championship, SEC Western Division titles four times (2001-04) and in recording the most wins for a single season in Auburn annals twice (15 in both 2002 and 2004).
During his tenure in Auburn, Mott took over head coaching duties for the beginning of the 2002 campaign while Hoppa served as an assistant coach with the U.S. Under-19 National Team. Later on in the season, he was honored with the AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year Award, sponsored by Scholastic Coach and Athletic Director Magazine, for assisting the Tigers in claiming their first-ever SEC Championship.
Before moving to Auburn, Mott served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Central Florida, for four years under Hoppa. While there, the Golden Knights compiled a 43-32-7 record, won three Trans Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships and earned an NCAA Tournament berth in 1998.
Prior to his stints at UCF and Auburn, Mott was the women's head coach at Division III Hilbert College in Hamburg, N.Y., from 1991-94. During his stay with the Hawks, he not only became the school's all-time winningest coach but also served as an assistant/goalkeeper coach with the men's soccer program.
A 2000 graduate of Central Florida with a bachelor's degree in general studies and a minor in criminal justice, Mott also earned an associate of science degree in 1994 from Erie Community College in Buffalo, N.Y. Prior to heading to college, Mott spent four years in the U.S. Coast Guard where he received his first taste of coaching. He assisted with the Coast Guard's select team in Portsmouth, Va., a team he was also a member of for two seasons after playing as a goalkeeper at Norwood Norfolk Central High School.
Mott holds a National "B" Coaching License from the United States Soccer Federation. He also has worked with Olympic Development Programs (ODP). While he has been on the ODP Regional staff from 2003-present, he has also worked with the girls USYS Region III ODP team in Florida and Alabama as a member of its Youth Soccer Association from 1998-2006.
Born in Norwood, N.Y., Mott is married to the former Jennifer Swartz. They have two sons, Dean and Will, and a daughter, Tacie.
