- Title:
- Volunteer Assistant Coach
Heading into his seventh season as the volunteer assistant coach for the Texas soccer program, the Longhorns goalkeepers remain in the capable hands of Scott Blount.
During his time with the Longhorns (2012-13, 2017-present), Blount has helped the Burnt Orange & White to three NCAA Tournament appearances while working with numerous starting goalkeepers including former four-time All-Big 12 Conference netminder Abby Smith, former standout Nicole Curry and current starter Savannah Madden.
Smith, who played at UT from 2012-15, has since gone on to become a professional with the Utah Royals and Kansas City of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) while also spending time on the U.S. Women’s Senior National Team roster. She finished her time at Texas as the program’s all-time leader in shutouts (30) and goals-against-average (0.84), and second in wins (36), while earning a trio of United Soccer Coaches All-Region accolades. Curry (2017-20) subsequently broke Smith's career GAA mark at 0.76 and completed her career with 34 victories and 23 shutouts.
Prior to his work at Texas, Blount was an assistant coach working with goalkeepers as part of Angela Kelly’s staff at Tennessee from 2002-2006. During his stay on “Rocky Top,” he played a part in two Southeastern Conference “Triple Crowns,” consisting of Eastern Division, regular-season and tournament titles (2003 & 2005), as well as three SEC regular-season (2003, 2004, 2005) and tournament titles (2002, 2003, 2005), five NCAA Tournament appearances and four NCAA Sweet 16 berths. Among his standout pupils with the Lady Vols was two-time All-SEC keeper Vanessa Phillips-Bosshart, who completed her career ranked second on the SEC career charts with 32 shutouts and a 0.82 goals-against-average, and standout Ellen Dean (18 wins, six solo shutouts and 75 saves as a senior in 2002).
A three-time Goalkeeper of the Year in the Southern Conference at Furman University from 1999-2001, Blount began his work on the Forty Acres prior to the 2012 campaign, working with the program from 2012-13 and 2017-present. A three-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Academic All-American, he earned honorable mention All-America accolades from College Soccer News in 2001 after backstopping the Paladins to their fourth-straight SoCon regular-season crown, their third-consecutive SoCon Tournament title and the squad’s third NCAA appearance in a row. The keeper finished 16-5, sported a 0.87 GAA and registered four shutouts in his final campaign. He was later selected as one of 11 finalists for the NSCAA/adidas College Scholar-Athlete award.
In February 2002, Blount was selected by the Atlanta Silverbacks with the 10th pick in the first round of the A-League College Player Draft. He was also invited to a training camp held by the Dallas Burn from Major League Soccer.
A native of Brentwood, Tenn., Blount was named to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-America Men’s Soccer Second Team as well as a three time NSCAA Scholar All-American First Team selection (1999, 2000, 2001).
A business administration and economics double major, he graduated cum laude from Furman in 2001. He went on to earn a master’s in business administration from Southern Methodist University and a juris doctorate from the University of Tennessee College of Law in Knoxville, Tenn. Additionally, Blount holds general securities representative licenses (Series 7 and Series 63) and is a CFA Charterholder.
From 2009 to the present, Blount has worked for Lancaster Pollard Mortgage Company, which helps health care and senior living providers expand and improve their services by delivering financial advice and financial solutions. During his tenure, he has elevated from an Associate position to Managing Director and has been the primary point of contact for southeastern Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana clients. He has worked on more than 100 transactions totaling over $1 billion in mortgage or bond proceeds, is active in structuring tax exempt bond transactions and has worked on a broad range of mixed-finance projects.
