Full Name: Rose Brimmer
Hometown: LaGrange, Texas
College: Texas A&I, 1981
Assistant coach Rose Brimmer begins her sixth season coaching the field events for the nationally-ranked Texas women's track and field program.
In just six seasons with the Longhorns, the former Westbury (Houston, Texas) High School coach coached high jumper Destinee Hooker to four NCAA High Jump national titles (three outdoor, one indoor) and six All-America honors, along with shot putter Michelle Carter who won the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championship and added four All-America nods. Most recently, Brimmer led walk-on Jordyn Brown to her first All-America honor with a fourth-place finish in the shot put at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championship. She was instrumental in helping the Longhorns win the 2006 NCAA Indoor National Championship and place in the top-six team finishes during the 2006 and 2007 outdoor championship meets.
Brimmer also coached four-time national champion and eight-time All-American Marshevet Hooker, and relay national champion and nine-time All-American Alexandria Anderson in the long jump. In 2007, she helped Ashley Laughlin become the only UT women's pole vaulter to clear 13 feet during the outdoor season. Under her coaching, Laughlin qualified for her first NCAA Indoor Championships during the 2006-07 season.
In her first year on the Forty Acres (2004-05), Brimmer made an immediate impact helping then-sophomore Carter to indoor and outdoor All-America honors in the shot put. Brimmer oversaw Carter's training and helped her shatter the school indoor shot put record at the 2005 NCAA Championships.
A longtime staple at Westbury, Brimmer served as a teacher and coach of track and field, cross country, basketball and volleyball since 1986.
As the girls' head track and field coach, her Westbury squads won four consecutive Class 5A state championships (1997-2000) and placed third at the state meet in 1995 and 2003. Additionally, Westbury earned five straight regional crowns (1996-2000), was regional runner-up in 1995, 2002 and 2003, and claimed the last 11 district championships, dating back to 1993.
In addition to leading her Westbury squads to state prominence, Brimmer also has developed scholastic national champions and All-Americans. Westbury's 4x100 meter relay squad gained national championship honors in 1998, and WHS' 4x200 relay was the national record-holder from 1998-2003. Brimmer developed 14 high school All-Americans, including former UT All-America and NCAA champion Raasin McIntosh.
Under Brimmer's leadership, Westbury had five individual Texas state champions and seven relay champions since 1994. Sixty of Brimmer's Westbury student-athletes went on to compete in intercollegiate track and field, while nine of her seniors from the class of 2004 signed national letters of intent or were offered scholarships for the 2004-05 academic year.
Among her coaching honors, Brimmer was tabbed 1998 Texas High School Track Coach of the Year, and since 1993, has been named District Coach of the Year 10 times and HISD Volleyball Coach of the Year six times. Additionally, Brimmer received a USA Track & Field Service Award in 1999.
In addition to her classroom work and coaching, Brimmer served as a Westbury HS mentor for at-risk students, as a member of the athletics peer tutor program, and on the school's safety and school improvement committees.
Brimmer and her husband Leo Brimmer, a retire police officer, reside in Bee Caves, outside of Austin. Brimmer's son, Brodney Pool, 25, is in his fifth season with the NFL's Cleveland Browns. The 2004 Associated Press All-Big 12 Conference selection earned three letters (2002-04) as a defensive back at the University of Oklahoma. Brimmer's daughter, Bria, is a sophomore volleyball player at South Carolina State who made Dean's List and was all-conference and academic all-conference as a freshman.
Brimmer is a 1981 graduate of the former Texas A&I University in Kingsville (now Texas A&M-Kingsville) with a degree in education. Captain of both the track and field and volleyball squads, Brimmer was the school's Female Athlete of the Year in 1981. She was inducted into Texas A&I's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989, along with former NFL great Darrell Green.
