First Season at Texas
Recognized for his successful track record in both recruiting and player development, Adam Cohen begins his first season as Assistant Coach at The University of Texas. Cohen brings 17 years of collegiate coaching experience to the Texas staff, including the last three seasons working with Sean Miller as Associate Head Coach at Xavier University.
During his collegiate coaching career, Cohen has helped five teams from four different conferences advance to the NCAA Tournament and two squads reach the postseason NIT. He has also helped develop 13 players who have seen game action in the NBA.
Cohen was named one of the 50 Most Impactful high major assistant coaches by Silver Waves Media during the 2022-23 season. He was invited to participate in the 2022 NCAA Champion Forum for Men’s Basketball at the NCAA national office in Indianapolis and was invited to the prestigious Athletic Director U’s Collegiate Coaching Consortium at the 2018 NCAA Final Four in San Antonio. Cohen also was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches’ (NABC) prestigious 30-under-30 Team, recognizing the nation’s top assistant coaches, at the 2016 NCAA Final Four in Houston.
During his three years (2022-25) at Xavier, the Musketeers posted an overall record of 65-40 (.619) and made a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances including a trip to the Sweet 16 in 2023. Xavier registered a 22-12 overall record (13-7 BIG EAST) and advanced to the NCAA Tournament First Round during the 2024-25 season. Entering postseason play, the Musketeers led the BIG EAST and ranked ninth nationally in fastbreak points (15.2 ppg) and were second in the conference and sixth nationally in free throw percentage (.794). Xavier also ranked second in the BIG EAST and seventh nationally in three-point percentage (.388) and third in the league and 15th nationally in assists per game (16.9 apg). Zach Freemantle earned All-BIG EAST Second Team mention, Ryan Conwell was tabbed All-BIG EAST Third Team and Jerome Hunter was selected as the 2024-25 BIG EAST Sportsmanship Award winner.
During Cohen’s first season at Xavier in 2022-23, he helped the Musketeers to one of the top-five winningest seasons in program history at 27-10 overall, tied the school record for most BIG EAST wins in a season (15-5) and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. Xavier led the nation in assists per game (19.1 apg) and ranked in the top 10 nationally in scoring offense (10th at 80.9 ppg), field goals percentage (seventh at .492) and three-point percentage (fifth at .390). Souley Boum earned All-BIG EAST First Team honors and was named an Associated Press honorable mention All-American. Colby Jones was selected as the No. 34 overall pick in the second round of the 2023 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Hornets and currently plays for the Washington Wizards.
Prior to his time at Xavier, Cohen worked for six years (2016-22) for Jerod Haase at Stanford University. He spent his first two seasons (2016-18) at Stanford as an assistant coach before serving as Associate Head Coach during his last four years (2018-22) with the Cardinal. Stanford registered a 19-16 overall record (11-7, third in Pac-12) during the 2017-18 season and advanced to the NIT Round of 16. This marked the school’s highest finish in the Pac-12 Conference and most league wins in 10 seasons. Daejon Davis was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team. The Cardinal recorded a 20-12 mark in 2019-20 and were under consideration for an NCAA Tournament berth before the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the postseason.
During his time with the Cardinal, Cohen played a significant role in recruiting both Ziaire Williams (2020) and Harrison Ingram (2021), as Stanford landed McDonald’s All-Americans in back-to-back years for the first time in program history. KZ Okpala was selected as the No. 32 overall pick in the second round of the 2019 NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns. Tyrell Terry was chosen as the No. 31 overall pick in the second round of the 2020 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks, and Ziaire Williams was taken as the No. 10 overall pick in the first round of the 2021 NBA Draft by the New Orleans Pelicans.
Cohen spent two seasons (2014-16) as an assistant coach for Kevin Stallings at Vanderbilt University and helped the Commodores to 40 total victories and a pair of postseason appearances. Vanderbilt registered a 21-14 overall record (9-9 SEC) in 2014-15 and reached the NIT quarterfinals. The following season, the Commodores posted a 19-14 mark (11-7, third in SEC) and advanced to the NCAA Tournament First Four. Wade Baldwin IV was selected as the No. 17 overall pick in the first round of the 2016 NBA Draft by the Memphis Grizzlies.
Cohen worked for one year (2012-13) as an assistant coach for Ben Braun at Rice University. Under his tutelage, Max Guercy became the school’s all-time leader in career assists (503). He then served as an assistant coach for Tommy Amaker during the following season (2013-14) at Harvard University. The Crimson set single-season school records for wins (27-5 record) and conference victories (13-1) while claiming the Ivy League regular season title. Harvard advanced to the Round of 32 in the 2014 NCAA Tournament after posting a 61-57 victory over No. 5 seed Cincinnati in the Round of 64. Siyani Chambers earned All-Ivy League second-team accolades and was a watch list finalist for the Bob Cousy Award as the nation’s top point guard.
Cohen spent three seasons (2009-12) on the staff at the University of Southern California. He worked for one year (2009-10) as video coordinator, before moving into the role of Director of Operations for the next two seasons (2010-12). The Trojans went 19-15 overall (10-8 Pac-10) in 2010-11 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Round of 64.
Cohen graduated in 2008 from the University of Arizona with a degree in political science. During his time as an undergraduate, he served as a student manager and assistant video coordinator on Hall of Fame coach Lute Olson’s staff. Following graduation, he began his coaching career as a graduate assistant coach for one year (2008-09) at the University of New Orleans.
Cohen serves on the Board of Directors for Rising Coaches Elite, a community and membership program for coaches that offers resources and support for professional and personal growth. He also was appointed to the Coaching for Literacy Coaches Council in 2017. Cohen has overseen several elite camps during his career, including the 2007 Nike Basketball clinic in Chengdu, China.
A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Cohen and his wife, Danielle, have two sons, Leo and Jordan.
