No. 12 Men’s Golf builds 12-stroke lead after day one at Jackson T. Stephens Cup

FRISCO, Texas — The No. 12 Texas Men's Golf team carded a two-round total of 16-under 560 (283-277) on Monday to build a 12-stroke lead after the opening day of the Jackson T. Stephens Cup at PGA Frisco Fields Ranch East. Junior Daniel Bennett fired a 36-hole total of 6-under 138 (70-68) and is tied for the individual lead entering Tuesday's final round of stroke play.
In Monday's morning round, Texas counted scores from fifth-year Matt Comegys (4-under 68), Bennett (2-under 70), freshman Brooks Harper (even-par 72) and junior Eduardo Derbez Torres (1-over 73) for a team score of 5-under 283. During the afternoon round, the Longhorns counted scores from Bennett (4-under 68), Derbez Torres (3-under 69), freshman Adam Villanueva (3-under 69) and Comegys (1-under 71) to post a team score of 11-under 277.
Texas holds a 12-stroke cushion in the team standings at 16-under 560 (283-277), while Texas A&M is second at 4-under 572 (285-287). Rice is third at 1-under 575 (286-289).
Bennett (70-68) is tied for the individual lead with Utah's Gabriel Palacios (70-68) at 6-under 138 after the opening 36 holes. Comegys is tied for third at 5-under 139 (68-71), while Derbez Torres is tied for seventh at 2-under 142 (73-69). All five Longhorns are in the top 10 in the individual standings after the tournament's first day, as both sophomore Adam Villanueva (76-69) and freshman Brooks Harper (72-73) are tied for 10th at 1-over 145.
The Jackson T. Stephens Cup continues with a final 18 holes of stroke play on Tuesday, Sept. 15. Texas will be paired with Texas A&M and Rice on Tuesday, and tee times will begin at 11:24 a.m. Central from the 1st tee. Golf Channel will provide live coverage on Tuesday from 3-6 p.m. Central.
Following the conclusion of stroke play, the top four teams will advance to match play on Wednesday. The top-two seeds will meet in the championship match on Wednesday, while the number three and four seeds will face off in the third-place match.
The Lineup
- Junior Daniel Bennett carded a two-round score of 6-under 138 (70-68) and is tied for the individual lead with Utah's Gabriel Palacios. Bennett tallied four birdies (holes 7, 10, 13 and 14) against two bogeys while posting a 2-under 70 in his morning round. Starting on hole 10 in the afternoon, he overcame a bogey on his opening hole and rallied to post six birdies (holes 18, 1, 4, 6, 7 and 8) along with a bogey on hole 2 to finish at 4-under 68 in his second round.
- Fifth-year Matt Comegys fired a 36-hole total of 5-under 139 (68-71) on Monday and is tied for third in the individual standings, just one stroke off the lead. In the morning round, Comegys was even-par through his first 11 holes before making birdies on holes 12, 13, 16 and 17 to post a 4-under 68. He returned to register three birdies (holes 2, 7 and 8) against two bogeys during his afternoon round.
- Junior Eduardo Derbez Torres recorded a two-round score of 2-under 142 (73-69) and is tied for seventh. In his afternoon round, Derbez Torres was 2-over through his opening three holes but rallied to post five birdies (holes 15, 4, 5, 7 and 9) and finish at 3-under 69.
- Sophomore Adam Villanueva fired a 36-hole total of 1-over 145 (76-69) on Monday and is tied for 10th. During his afternoon round, Villanueva tallied five birdies (holes 14, 16, 18, 1 and 3) against a pair of bogeys to card a 3-under 69. The 3-under 69 marked his collegiate low 18-hole round, besting his previous mark of 2-over 74 in the second round of the 2026 Southern Highlands Collegiate (March 2).
- Making his collegiate debut, freshman Brooks Harper recorded a 36-hole total of 1-over 145 (72-73) on Monday and is tied for 10th. In his morning round, Harper posted a pair of birdies (holes 7 and 15) against two bogeys en route to an even-par 72. He carded three birdies (holes 15, 17 and 7) during his afternoon round.
