First Season at Texas
David Miller begins his first season as Assistant Coach at The University of Texas. Miller brings 12 years of collegiate coaching experience to the Texas staff, including seven seasons working with Sean Miller at both Xavier University and the University of Arizona.
During his collegiate coaching career, Miller has helped four teams advance to the NCAA Tournament and two squads reach the postseason NIT. He has also helped develop 21 players who have seen game action in the NBA. Miller was named one of the 50 Most Impactful high major assistant coaches by Silver Waves Media during the 2022-23 season.
Miller served as an assistant coach under Sean Miller for the last three years (2022-25) at Xavier. During those three seasons, the Musketeers posted an overall record of 65-40 (.619) and made a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances including a trip to the Sweet 16 in 2023. Xavier registered a 22-12 overall record (13-7 BIG EAST) and advanced to the NCAA Tournament First Round during the 2024-25 season. Entering postseason play, the Musketeers led the BIG EAST and ranked ninth nationally in fastbreak points (15.2 ppg) and were second in the conference and sixth nationally in free throw percentage (.794). Xavier also ranked second in the BIG EAST and seventh nationally in three-point percentage (.388) and third in the league and 15th nationally in assists per game (16.9 apg). Zach Freemantle earned All-BIG EAST Second Team mention, Ryan Conwell was tabbed All-BIG EAST Third Team and Jerome Hunter was selected as the 2024-25 BIG EAST Sportsmanship Award winner.
During Miller’s first season at Xavier in 2022-23, he helped the Musketeers to one of the top-five winningest seasons in program history at 27-10 overall, tied the school record for most BIG EAST wins in a season (15-5) and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. Xavier led the nation in assists per game (19.1 apg) and ranked in the top 10 nationally in scoring offense (10th at 80.9 ppg), field goals percentage (seventh at .492) and three-point percentage (fifth at .390). Souley Boum earned All-BIG EAST First Team honors and was named an Associated Press honorable mention All-American. Colby Jones was selected as the No. 34 overall pick in the second round of the 2023 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Hornets and currently plays for the Washington Wizards.
Prior to his time at Xavier, Miller worked for one year (2021-22) as an assistant coach for Tim Miles at San Jose State University.
Miller spent two seasons (2019-21) as Director of On-Campus Recruiting and Basketball Analytics for Sean Miller at Arizona. In that role, he oversaw all video operations, assisted with the organization of official and unofficial recruiting visits and managed the analytics and data needs for the program. Miller also helped Arizona ink a top-10 national recruiting class in 2020 that featured Bennedict Mathurin (No. 6 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers), Dalen Terry (No. 18 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls), Azuolas Tubelis and Kerr Kriisa.
Miller worked for two years (2017-19) at UC Santa Barbara for Joe Pasternack in the role of Director of Basketball Operations. During his time with the Gauchos, UCSB registered a combined record of 45-19 (.703). He spent two seasons (2015-17) on the staff at Alabama under Avery Johnson. Miller served in the role of assistant video coordinator in his first year (2015-16) and was promoted to Director of Player Development in his second season (2016-17). The Crimson Tide tallied 37 wins and made a pair of NIT appearances in Miller’s two years in Tuscaloosa.
Miller began his collegiate coaching career as a graduate manager at Arizona for two seasons (2013-15). During those two seasons, the Wildcats posted a 67-9 (.882) overall record, won a pair of Pac-12 regular-season titles and one Pac-12 Tournament title (2015) and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight in both years.
Miller began his undergraduate playing career at El Camino College (Torrance, Calif.) for two years (2008-10). He then transferred to Arizona and served for three seasons (2010-13) as a student manager for the Wildcats. Miller earned his bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Arizona in 2013 and went on to receive his master’s degree in education from Arizona in 2015.
Miller was born in Phoenix and grew up in Manhattan Beach, Calif. He and his wife, Carly, have one son, Max.
