Two Minutes with Kareem Streete-Thompson
Kareem Streete-Thompson is in his third year as an assistant coach at the University of Texas after successful stints at other major programs. He works with the Longhorns in the horizontal jumps group.
In his first year at Texas, Streete-Thompson coached Nick Phynn to a scoring performance in the triple jump at Big 12 Indoor Championships finishing fourth. He also saw Basil Fares finish seventh in the event as well as the long jump at the outdoor conference championship. On the women’s side, Melissa Gonzalez finished eighth in the triple jump indoors.
He built on that success in his second year at Texas as Fares finished second at the Big 12 Conference Indoor Championships in 2015, trailing the winner by only one centimeter. Fares also posted a sixth-place finish in the triple jump indoors and qualified for the NCAA Championships in the long jump. Outdoors, Phynn took eighth in the triple jump.
Since coming to Texas, Streete-Thompson has seen the personal records of Fares and Phynn improved drastically. With two years of his coaching, Fares has improved nearly a full meter in the long jump and almost 6.5 feet in the triple jump. Phynn improved his triple jump mark by more than a meter from his freshman to sophomore year under Streete-Thompson’s direction.
Streete-Thompson came to Texas after spending the 2012-13 season coaching the horizontal jumps, short sprints and hurdles for the University of Missouri. He was instrumental in the development and success of freshman standout Markesh Woodson, an indoor All-American in the 60-meter dash who was the Southeastern Conference Freshman Runner of the Year. Woodson set four 60m school records, the last of which came in a 6.60 SEC title-winning performance. He was fifth in the event at the NCAA Indoor Championships and followed up with a 10th-place showing in the 100m at NCAA Outdoors, the highest finish for a Tiger in the event at the national outdoor meet since 1987.
Before joining the Missouri staff, Streete-Thompson spent four seasons at Florida State, guiding the women’s team in the sprint, hurdle and relay events. During that time, he coached nine All-Americans, including the NCAA runner-up 4x100m relay squad in 2009. In the same year, the Seminole women finished fourth nationally in the team race. Prior to 2009, Streete-Thompson served as a volunteer assistant for the multi-events and jumps at the University of Florida.
Streete-Thompson had a standout athletic career at Rice University, where he earned 11 All-America honors and won a pair of NCAA long jump titles as a senior in 1995. For his efforts, he was inducted into the Rice Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001. He continued on to the professional ranks, where he won the silver medal in long jump at the 2001 World Indoor Championships in Lisbon and competed in the 100m at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.
