AUSTIN, Texas -- Sophomore midfielder Amy Burlingham (Costa Mesa, Calif.) scored 13 minutes into the second half and goalkeeper Dana Hall (Kingwood, Texas) made two key saves on the goal line in the final seconds to help Texas (6-4, 2-2 Big 12) notch a 1-0 victory over Oklahoma (4-3-3, 0-2 Big 12) in front of 1,992 fans at Myers Stadium on Friday, Oct. 1. Notably, the one-goal win also marked the Horns' third shutout of the 2004 campaign.
With Oklahoma and Texas playing stiff defensive lines throughout the first half, both teams had limited opportunities to score, but quality chances did result as the Longhorns launched nine shots in the half to the Sooners five. While UT saw Kelly McDonald (Littleton, Colo.) and Ashley Foster (Athens, Ga.) come within inches of scoring, the Sooners' Andrea Hurley actually fired a shot into the Horns' goal with just over a minute remaining in the period, but it was waived off as Hall had her feet taken out from underneath her for a foul. With only near misses for both sides, the score remained knotted at 0-0 at the intermission.
In the second half, Texas again came out on the attack, but the Sooner defense continued to stand tall and keep the scoreless deadlock in tact. Then in the 58th minute, Burlingham corralled consecutive passes from Caitlin Kennedy (Euless, Texas) and Kelsey Carpenter (Allen, Texas) to break in on the OU goal from the far side and fired a shot off the hands of Oklahoma goalkeeper Jennifer Nichols that crossed the goal line for a 1-0 Longhorns lead. Now trailing by one, the Sooners sent more players forward and equaled their shot total from the first half over the final 31 minutes of action. Included in that offensive surge in the final seconds were a shot from Christy Kenkel and a rebound attempt from Becky Nelson from inside the six-yard box that were both denied by Hall to seal the victory. While Hall improved to 6-4 on the year with the win after tallying a season-high seven saves, Nichols incurred the loss despite making nine stops.
Paving the way for the Texas offense were the trio of Burlingham, McDonald and Kelly Wilson (Odessa, Texas), who each recorded three shots on goal while accounting for 13 of the team's 19 total shots and the contest's lone score. Oklahoma, meanwhile, saw Nelson come up with three shots, including a pair on goal, to pace its attack on the evening.
