AUSTIN, Texas -- Senior Kelly Wilson (Odessa, Texas) scored once and posted a pair of assists to lead Texas (7-4, 3-2 Big 12) to a 3-1 victory over Oklahoma State (9-2-1, 1-2 Big 12) in front of 1,181 fans at Myers Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 3. The win not only marked the Horns third in their last four matches, but also saw Wilson become the school's all-time assist leader.
After Oklahoma State fired the first shot of the match shortly after the opening kickoff, Texas went on the attack and quickly set up possession in OSU territory. Despite being denied on their first few opportunities by Cowgirls goalkeeper Breanna Truelove, the Longhorns managed to grab a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute when Caitlin Kennedy (Euless, Texas) sprung Wilson into the OSU penalty area with a through volley that she fired toward net and had the deflection find the foot of Kelly McDonald (Littleton, Colo.), who launched a shot past Truelove for her second goal of the year. Down by one, the Cowgirls immediately pushed forward looking for the equalizer, but the UT defense and sophomore goalkeeper Dana Hall (Kingwood, Texas) held strong against a pair of corner kicks and a number of free kicks to preserve the one-goal advantage at the intermission.
In the second half, the Cowgirls again came out strong on offense by equaling their shot total from the first period with three shots within the first five minutes, but Hall and the UT defense continued to keep OSU off the board. Then, in the 59th minute, McDonald moved around two defenders in the Oklahoma State penalty area before being hauled down to produce a penalty kick that Wilson took and fired off the near post for her eighth goal of the year to give UT a 2-0 lead. Less than 10 minutes later, as Texas continued to place pressure on the Cowgirls' defense, Kelsey Carpenter (Allen, Texas) redirected a pass from Wilson into an open OSU net for a 3-0 Longhorns advantage. Despite additional opportunities for the Horns over the final 23 minutes as they outshot the Cowgirls by a 22-7 margin for the game, Oklahoma State managed to get on the board next as Jolene Schweitzer broke up the shutout bid with her sixth goal of the year at 88:29 off a deflected shot taken by Leah Carr. From there, the UT defense shut things down and managed to close out the 3-1 win. Earning the victory in goal was Hall, who improved to 7-4 overall, while Truelove was tagged with the loss despite coming up with five saves and making numerous stops throughout the game.
While McDonald and Wilson each tallied a game-high five shots apiece to headline the Texas offense on the day, Wilson posted four points on the afternoon to not only up her team-leading point total to 24, but also become UT's career assist leader (35). Oklahoma State, meanwhile, had its attack led by Jere Boykin, who fired two shots, and Schweitzer, who accounted for the Cowgirls' lone score.
Up next, the Horns head out on the road as they travel to Lincoln, Neb., to face the Huskers in a 7 p.m. Central match on Friday, Oct. 8.
