Soccer earns tie against Colorado

BOULDER, Colo. -- After coming up with four shots and two quality chances in the two overtime periods with the Buffaloes and not coming up the go-ahead goal, Texas (7-5-1, 3-3-1 Big 12) earned a 1-1 tie in double overtime with Colorado (8-4-2, 1-3-1 Big 12) in front of 1,032 fans at Pleasant View Soccer Complex on Sunday, Oct. 10. Notably, while the tie was the first of the season for the Longhorns, it marked the Texas' first since 2002 (Sept. 27 - a 1-1 tie with Washington at home) and UT's first road tie since Oct. 22, 1999 (a 0-0 tie at Kansas).
Texas jumped out in front to an early 1-0 lead at the 22:27 mark when freshman Kelsey Carpenter (Allen, Texas) slid a shot past CU goalkeeper Jessica Keller after Kelly McDonald (Littleton, Colo.) had broken free down the right flank and slotted a pass to her on the left side. While the Buffaloes would managed to out shoot the Horns by an 11-2 margin during the opening period, the score remained 1-0 in favor of UT at the intermission.
Just less than 14 minutes into the second half, Colorado would knot the score at 1-1 after Fran Munnelly, who was slotted the ball behind the Texas defense, followed up her first shot, which was stopped by Longhorns' goalkeeper Alex Gagarin (Austin, Texas), with another that found the back of the net for her fifth goal of the year. With both sides only mustering a total of five shots in the period, the game remained tied at the end of 90 minutes and headed to overtime. In the first extra period, McDonald was tripped up at the top of the CU penalty area to set up a dangerous free kick for Texas. Freshman Caitlin Kennedy (Euless, Texas) would then take the kick and drill a shot off the crossbar as the match remained deadlocked.
Still tied after the first 10-minute overtime session, the two teams moved into the second overtime where UT again had an opportunity to claim the win as a service into the box was flicked on by Kelly Wilson (Odessa, Texas) to a breaking McDonald, who just lifted her shot from six yards over the crossbar. Although the Horns would hold a 4-0 shot advantage in the 20 minutes of overtime played, the match ended in a 1-1 tie that saw Gagarin and Keller pick up their first and second ties of the season, respectively.
The trio of Carpenter, who tallied her fifth goal of the year in the contest, Kennedy and Amy Burlingham (Costa, Mesa, Calif.) each recorded two shots on the afternoon to pace the Texas offense, while Munnelly fired a game-high five shots while tallying CU's lone score to pace the Colorado effort.
The Horns now return home to Myers Stadium for a 7 p.m. Central match against BYU on Thursday, Oct. 14. Of note, the game between the Longhorns and Cougars will be televised on a tape-delayed basis (Thursday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. Central) by CSTV.
