Burlingham leads Soccer past BYU

AUSTIN, Texas -- Sophomore Amy Burlingham (Costa Mesa, Calif.) collected a pass from freshman Caitlin Kennedy (Euless, Texas) and found the back of the Cougars' net for her third goal of the year a little over four minutes into the first overtime session to lift Texas (8-5-1) to a 3-2 overtime victory over BYU (5-8-3) before 868 fans at Mike A. Myers Field on Thursday, Oct. 14. Of note, while the victory upped UT's current home winning streak to seven games to tie the school record set back in 2000, the match was also Texas' fourth overtime game in its last seven contests as the team earned its second extra-session victory of the year.
Kelly McDonald (Littleton, Colo.) opened the scoring in the 24th minute when she banked a shot from 17 yards out off the cross bar and into the upper left corner to stake the Longhorns to a 1-0 lead. Freshman Kelsey Carpenter (Allen, Texas), meanwhile, picked up an assist on the goal to give her five on the year. Ashley Foster (Athens, Ga.) then staked UT to a 2-0 advantage in the 41st minute when she settled a pass from Kelly Wilson (Odessa, Texas) just outside the penalty area and fired a shot over BYU goalkeeper Erika Woodbury for her second career score. From there, the Texas defense and goalkeeper Alex Gagarin (Austin, Texas) held the Cougars off the board until halftime.
In the second period, BYU went on the attack and at 54:40 cut the UT lead in half when Claire Thomas headed a ball past Gagarin off a corner kick taken by Bobbi Tillotson. Texas would cling to that lead until the 87th minute when off a free kick served by Tillotson, Jaime Rendich controlled a loose ball at the top of the penalty area and lifted a shot under the crossbar and above the outstretched arms of Gagarin to knot the score at 2-2. After the final three minutes in regulation ticked off the clock without any scoring, the match moved into overtime. Following a couple of quick opportunities by BYU in the first extra session, the Horns managed to bottle up the Cougars in their own end. It was then that Kennedy broke loose on the left side inside the six and centered a pass that reached Burlingham on the opposite corner of the penalty area that she lifted into the back of the net to propel the Horns to victory. While Gagarin, who posted five saves, picked up her first win of the year, Woodbury incurred the loss despite facing 19 shots and making four stops.
Headlining the Longhorns offense was McDonald, who not only tallied her fourth goal of the season on a game-high five shots but also scored points in her fourth consecutive game, and Kennedy, who with her assist has now notched points in six of the last eight matches. BYU, meanwhile, had its attack led by Tillotson, who set up both Cougars scores, and Rendich, who fired a match-best five shots.
Up next, the Horns host Missouri in a conference match at Myers Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 17 at 12 p.m. Central.
