Soccer shuts out Missouri

AUSTIN, Texas -- The trio of Kelly McDonald (Littleton, Colo.), Ashley Foster (Athens, Ga.) and Kelsey Carpenter (Allen, Texas) each scored two goals to lead Texas (9-5-1, 4-3-1 Big 12) to a 6-0 shutout victory over Missouri (6-9-1, 3-5-0 Big 12) in front of a crowd of 804 at Myers Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 17. With the win, the Longhorns not only earned their fourth shutout of the season, but also upped their home winning streak to eight games, which is a school record. Although Missouri fired the first shot of the match and was able to keep containment in Texas' end early in the half, the Horns were the first to strike as Kelly Wilson (Odessa, Texas) sent a cross from deep along the far side above the six-yard box that Amy Burlingham (Costa Mesa, Calif.) lofted toward the far post for McDonald, who headed the ball off the cross bar and into the net for a 1-0 lead at 13:05. While Mizzou tried for the equalizer by pressuring the UT defense with multiple players pushing forward, the Longhorns continued to counter and create their own opportunities, including a connection off a goal kick from Alex Gagarin (Austin, Texas) that was flicked on by Nikki Thaden (Clive, Iowa) to a streaking Foster, who got behind the MU defense and ripped a shot off the near post and into the net at 42:18 to provide Texas with a 2-0 advantage heading into halftime.
In the second period, while the Tigers again pushed forward early trying to rally, the Horns used a long pass from Karen Haight (Beaverton, Ore.) to spring McDonald in alone on the Mizzou net where she notched her sixth goal of the year to put UT on top 3-0 at the 51-minute mark. Continuing to attack, the Horns then added consecutive goals from Carpenter in the 70th and 75th minutes followed by a score from Foster at 78:55 that was set up by Carpenter and Lauren Field (Dallas, Texas) to claim a 6-0 advantage. Meanwhile, the Texas defense limited MU to only five shots in the second half and one shot on goal for the entire game to seal the shutout win. While Gagarin picked up her 10th career shutout and second win in as many games, Mizzou goalkeeper Kira Reyes incurred her first loss of the year despite turning in a four-save effort.
Headlining Texas' offense on the day was McDonald, who with two goals now has points in each of the last five games, the tandem of Foster and Carpenter, who each recorded the first multiple-goal games of their careers, and Thaden who picked up a pair of assists. Mizzou, meanwhile, had its attack paced by Jennifer Nobis, who fired five of the club's 13 shots.
Up next, the Horns continue their four-game homestand at Myers Stadium with a 7 p.m. Central match against Iowa State on Friday, Oct. 22.
