NORMAN, Okla. -- The 10th-ranked Texas volleyball team earned its 10th Big 12 Conference win in 2004 - matching its entire 2003 total - with a 3-0 (30-16, 30-15, 30-19) defeat of Oklahoma at OU's McCasland Field House on Wednesday night.
Texas (18-2, 10-2 Big 12) hit .464 for the match as senior Mira Topic (Kastela Kambelovac, Croatia) had a match-high 15 kills and sophomore Brandy Magee (Mission Viejo, Calif.) added 14 kills, one off her season high. Freshman Jen Christian (Gilbert, Ariz.) had eight kills and no errors on 14 attacks. As a team, Texas had only nine hitting errors on 97 attacks in the match. Oklahoma (10-10, 2-10 Big 12) was led by Joanna Schmidt's 12 kills.
UT out-blocked OU, 10.0 to 3.0, and saw senior Bethany Howden (Austin, Texas) lead the way with five blocks. Magee and sophomore Dariam Acevedo each added four blocks in the victory. Defensively, freshman Alyson Jennings (Costa Mesa, Calif.) had a match-high 13 digs as Texas held OU to a .080 hitting percentage for the match, the seventh time this season UT held an opponent below .100. UT also out-dug the Sooners, 41-27.
"We've been working on our offensive rhythm in practice lately, and I thought we executed very well tonight. Everyone came out patient and ready to play and it showed on the court. Defensively, our blocking was really solid, and we were able to put a lot of pressure on Oklahoma," Texas head coach Jerritt Elliott said after the match.
In game one, after Oklahoma pulled within one point at 10-9, UT ran off four straight points to take control of the game for good. Topic had two of her six kills in the game in that stretch. In the second game, the Horns pulled out early, inching ahead by six points right out of the gates, 8-2. Texas had seven blocks in the second game as Acevedo and Howden each had four in the stanza. In game three, Texas used a 6-1 midway through the game to put the game out of reach.
The 10th-ranked Longhorns return to action on Saturday, Oct. 30, when they host Baylor in a 6:30 p.m. match at Gregory Gym. TexasSports.com will broadcast live audio from the match, and KVR-TV will also broadcast the match live on television.
