Volleyball dominates Iowa State in 3-0 win

AMES, Iowa -- Longhorns middle blockers Bethany Howden (Austin, Texas) and Brandy Magee (Mission Viejo, Calif.) each recorded 12 kills to lead all players as the No. 11 Texas volleyball team earned a 3-0 win (30-14, 30-20, 30-14) over Iowa State on Sunday afternoon at the Hilton Coliseum. Texas (23-3, 15-3 Big 12) used an all-around game to defeat the Cyclones (8-20, 1-18 Big 12), out-hitting, out-blocking, out-serving and out-digging their hosts. The match was the first of three matches in a span of seven days for the Horns.
Texas connected for a .345 attack percentage overall, and limited Iowa State to a .000 attack mark for the match. UT also had 49 kills to ISU's 26, and out-dug the Cyclones, 46-23. At the next, Texas used 11.0 blocks - to Iowa State's 4.0 - to help the offensive effort.
Magee added an .611 attack percentage and four blocks, while Howden had six blocks. Sophomore Dariam Acevedo (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) added seven kills and three aces, while freshman Alyson Jennings (Costa Mesa, Calif.) had a match-high 12 digs.
For Iowa State, Nicole Lorenzen had a team-best seven kills and added two blocks.
"I thought we executed well overall today, both offensively and defensively," Texas head coach Jerritt Elliott said. "Brandy and Bethany did a good job of getting themselves open today and it helped our offensive balance all match. It was nice to get the whole team in the match, as well. And it's always nice to win on the road."
UT jumped out early in the first game, pulling ahead 10-2 with the help of seven-straight points on freshman Michelle Moriarty's (Houston, Texas) serve. She had two aces in that run, and Mira Topic (Kastela Kambelovac, Croatia) and Magee combined for a pair of blocks. The Longhorns then strung together a 10-3 run to move ahead, 20-5. UT hit .571 in the game and negated Iowa State's attack, limiting the team to a .000 attack efficiency.
In the second game, Texas cooled off considerably, hitting just .125, but the Horns' defense stepped up to hold ISU's attack to a sub-zero -.065. ISU held the lead until Texas managed to tie the game at 8-8, before UT surged ahead to 14-8 lead behind a 6-0 run fueled by Howden and Moriarty. Moriarty led it off with a dump kill, then Howden had three-straight kills before the pair combined for a block. Texas continued to build its lead and finished the game off with a 10-point lead.
In the final game, Texas pulled out early and didn't look back. UT pulled ahead 16-9, then closed the game with a 14-5 run, including a finishing stretch of 8-2 that culminated with a Jessica Curtis (Marietta, Ga.) kill to cap the match. Texas hit .484 in the final game, committing only two errors on 31 attacks, as all 12 players on the roster rotated into the match.
The Longhorns return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 24, traveling to Lincon, Neb., for a face-off with No. 3 Nebraska at the NU Coliseum at 7 p.m. The match will be shown on CSTV via tape-delay on Thursday, Nov. 25 (Thanksgiving).
