Magee's career-high 24 kills lead Volleyball past Colorado

BOULDER, Colo. -- Sophomore Brandy Magee (Mission Viejo, Calif.) recorded a career-high 24 kills, smashing her previous mark of 16, as the 10th-ranked Texas volleyball team defeated Colorado, 3-1, on Wednesday night at the Coors Event Center in a Big 12 Conference match. Magee hit .742 on the evening with a lone error on 31 attacks, and also tied her season high with seven blocks.
Texas (20-2, 12-2 Big 12) senior Bethany Howden (Austin, Texas) added 19 kills and six blocks and senior Mira Topic (Kastela Kambelovac, Croatia) chipped in 18 to help lead the Longhorns to their fourth-straight victory. Freshman setter Michelle Moriarty (Houston, Texas) registered her fifth double-double of the season with a career-high 64 assists and 10 digs. Freshman libero Alyson Jennings (Costa Mesa, Calif.) had 17 digs, as UT out-hit the Buffs, .325 to .123. The win marked the fourth-straight match UT has hit over .325, all wins.
Colorado fell to 11-10 overall and 6-8 in conference matches.
"Our middles had a huge night," Texas head coach Jerritt Elliott said. "Bethany was on top of her game tonight and Brandy, well, there isn't much more to say than she played like an All-American tonight. She was phenomenal.
"I thought Michelle set a great match and did a really nice job tonight. Our defensive keys to the match were stopping (Allie) Griffin and (Nicole) Carr and we did a really good job on those. Our blocking was solid, which is also nice to see continually improve. Overall, it was nice to come into Boulder and get a win and let us go into our off weekend on a high note," Elliott concluded.
After UT earned a 30-19 victory in the first game, the two teams needed extra points to decide the second, which CU took, 31-29. However, Texas came back to dominate the final two games, winning 30-17 and 30-19. The team hit a hot .519 in the first game and went on to win its 28th, 29th and 30th games of the year when holding opponents under 20 points.
The Texas defense, which is the second-best in the Big 12 Conference behind fourth-ranked Nebraska, limited Colorado's top hitter - Griffin - to a -.048 hitting percentage and only 12 kills, while Carr was held to only 10 kills and a .179 hitting percentage.
Texas will have the weekend off before returning to action on Thursday, Nov. 11, when the Horns host No. 14 Texas A&M at Gregory Gym in a 6:30 p.m., the second of two State Farm Lone Star Showdown matches.
