Moving into the coaching ranks two years ago after establishing herself as a standout defender on the Division I level as well as in the WUSA and on the U.S. National Team, Kelly Lindsey enters her second season as an assistant coach at The University of Texas with the start of the 2005 campaign.
Before joining the UT staff, Lindsey was hired as an assistant coach at Colorado for the 2003 season and helped head coach Bill Hempen's squad post a 15-4-1 overall record en route to earning the program's first-ever Big 12 title and NCAA Tournament berth. Prior to her coaching career, the Omaha, Neb., native served as a defender for the WUSA's San Jose CyberRays (2001-2003), a member of the full U.S. Women's National Team on three occasions, and a four-year letterwinner as well as two-time team captain at Notre Dame (1997-2000).
The WUSA's top draft pick in 2001, Lindsey played in 47 games for the CyberRays over three seasons while making 44 starts on defense and posted one goal on five shots on her way to becoming the youngest player in league history to play in at least half of the franchise's games. She also helped San Jose capture the 2001 World Championship and garnered second-team WUSA All-Global Team honors that year. Additionally, she was selected as the CyberRays' Most Valuable Defender in 2002 after anchoring the club's central defense.
Prior to entering the WUSA, Lindsey graduated from Notre Dame in 2001 with a bachelor's degree in economics and computer applications after serving as a starting defender for the Irish from 1997-2000. During her tenure in South Bend, Ind., she not only helped her club compile an 88-11-4 record, including a 32-1-1 mark in Big East play, but was also a member of a defensive line that allowed just 59 goals and tallied 62 shutouts in four years. Selected to the 1997 Soccer America All-Freshman Team and the 2000 All-Big East as well as NSCAA All-Region squads, Lindsey scored four goals and registered 14 assists for 22 points over a college career in which she played in 82 games and aided Notre Dame in capturing four consecutive conference titles, earning four NCAA Tournament berths and in reaching the Women's College Cup in 1997, 1999 and 2000. Notably, she netted the game-winning penalty kick against Nebraska during the 1999 quarterfinals after playing in all 150 minutes of the match.
Additionally, Lindsey, who is a member of the U.S. Soccer Federation's Athlete Council Committee and has also served as the U.S. Under-21 National Team assistant coach, was selected to partake in the U.S. Under-18 (1995), Under-21 (1996-99) and National Team (1997-99, 2001) camps prior to joining the full women's national squad for stints in 2000 (when she played every minute to aid the U.S. in winning the Australia Cup), 2001 (for the U.S. Nike Cup) and 2002 (for the U.S. team match versus Scotland).
