No. 13 Soccer downs No. 20 Michigan

AUSTIN, Texas -- Nikki Thaden (Clive, Iowa) and Kelly Wilson (Odessa, Texas) each scored a goal and assisted on another as No. 13 Texas (1-1) earned a 4-1 victory over No. 20 Michigan (0-2) in front of 1,009 fans at Myers Stadium on Sunday, Aug. 29.
After being shutout in the season opener by Clemson, the Longhorns broke on top 1-0 less than five minutes into the match as Thaden redirected a corner kick from Caitlin Kennedy (Euless, Texas) out of the air and into the back of the Michigan net. Then, in the 14th minute, the Wolverines knotted the score at 1-1 when Katelin Spencer intercepted a clear at the top of the UT penalty area and set up Therese Heaton for a open shot that she bent over the outreached hands of Dana Hall (Kingwood, Texas).
Both teams would battle for the momentum with the score now tied, but the Horns managed to reclaim the lead when Kelsey Carpenter (Allen, Texas) tallied her first career score with an unassisted goal at 23:44. Less than 16 minutes later Wilson established a 3-1 Texas advantage when she took a slotted pass from Thaden to break in alone on MU goalkeeper Megan Tuura, who she beat with a shot inside the far post.
The two-goal lead for Texas then stayed in tact until halftime and through the first 13 minutes of the second period when Priscilla Fite (Irving, Texas) rocketed a shot from the top of the penalty area off consecutive passes from Kristen Teter (Kingwood, Texas) and Wilson to stake the Horns to a 4-1 lead. From there, Hall and the UT defense kept the Wolverines in check over the remaining minutes by limiting them to only five shots in the second half to preserve the three-goal win and even Texas' record at 1-1 on the year. While Hall, who allowed only one goal over 90 minutes of action, picked up the win, Tuura incurred the loss despite making five saves on the evening.
With three points apiece, Thaden and Wilson paved the way for the Texas offense, which had four different players score, outshot the Wolverines by a 24-8 margin and saw Kennedy and Carpenter notch their first career points with an assist and a goal, respectively. Leading the Michigan attack, meanwhile, was Heaton, who scored MU's lone goal and fired a team-best four shots on the night.
The Longhorns return to action on Friday, Sept. 3 when they welcome Florida International to Myers Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. match.
