09.11.2004 | Volleyball
AUSTIN, Texas -- Senior Mira Topic (Kastela Kambelovac, Croatia) recorded her second double-double (24 kills, 11 digs) in as many matches to lead the Texas volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-13, 30-17, 30-17) victory over Louisiana Tech at Gregory Gym in the fourth match of the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational. With the victory, Texas improved to 6-0 for the first time since 1999. Louisiana Tech fell to 3-4 overall.
A trio of Horns - Topic, senior Bethany Howden (Austin, Texas) and sophomore Brandy Magee (Mission Viejo, Calif.) - recorded double-figure kills in the victory. Howden had 11 kills and a .500 hitting percentage, while Magee added 12 kills, two aces and a .455 hitting percentage. Freshman setter Michelle Moriarty (Houston, Texas) had a career-high 41 assists as the team hit .476 for the match with 60 kills.
The Techsters' Joy Okpa led her squad with 10 kills.
"I was pleased with the way we came out prepared to play and how we carried that momentum throughout the match," Texas head coach Jerritt Elliott said. "All aspects of our game came together and we had a great level of competitiveness today."
With Texas holding a 16-8 lead in the first game, freshman Sarah Holloway (Aurora, Colo.) scored eight-straight points on her serve to put the game out of reach at 24-8. Helped by seven kills from Topic and six from Howden, the Horns hit .528 in the first game.
UT again opened strong in the second game, stretching an 8-4 lead to 15-9. The Horns' front line of Topic, Howden, Magee and freshman Jen Christian (Gilbert, Ariz.) combined for 17 kills in the game.
In the last game, Louisiana Tech clung to UT - within five points at 15-10 - before the Horns went on an 8-0 run to close the game and limit La. Tech to fewer than 20 points for the third game in a row.
In the first match of the day, LSU defeated Liberty, 3-1.
