Soccer falls short against Baylor

WACO, Texas -- The Longhorns held the upper hand in shots by count of 22-11 for the match, but Anna Schuch scored 18 seconds into the first overtime period for the Bears as No. 22 Texas (5-4, 1-2 Big 12) lost a hard-fought 2-1 match to Baylor (4-4-1, 1-1 Big 12) in front of a crowd of 450 at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field on Sunday, Sept. 26.
Just less than eight minutes into the match, Texas claimed a 1-0 lead as Kristen Teter (Kingwood, Texas) tallied her first goal of the year by converting a cross from Kelly Wilson (Odessa, Texas) from 10 yards out. The Bears then answered the UT goal at 14:16 with one of their own as Tiffany Boshers directed a corner kick from Jennifer Martin into the back of the Texas net to knot the game at 1-1. The Longhorns would attempt to reclaim the lead later in the first period as Wilson rang a shot off the post at 16:10 and Nikki Thaden (Clive, Iowa) as well as Wilson came up with quality shots in the waning moments of the half, but Baylor goalkeeper Ashley Holder countered with a pair of saves to keep the game tied at 1-1 heading into the intermission.
While the Horns would outshoot the Bears again in the second half by firing 13 shots to Baylor's seven, the match remained tied at the end of regulation and moved into overtime. In the first extra period, UT was aiming to score its second straight overtime victory, but Schuch managed to lace a shot from 15 yards out past Texas goalkeeper Dana Hall (Kingwood, Texas) to give the Bears a 2-1 win at 90:18. Notching the victory in goal for Baylor was Holder, who improved to 4-4-1 with an eight-save effort, while Hall incurred the loss for Texas to fall to 5-4 on the year.
Pacing the Longhorns' offense on the day was Wilson, who fired a team-best five shots, including three on goal, and picked up her team-leading sixth assist on the season. Baylor, meanwhile, had its attack led by Schuch, who posted a club-high five shots and scored her fourth goal of the year to give BU the win in overtime.
The Longhorns now return home to Myers Stadium to face Oklahoma and Oklahoma State on Friday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m., respectively. Of note, Friday's match is presented by Time Warner Cable, while Sunday's tilt is presented by H-E-B.
