No. 7 Men's Swimming and Diving falls to No. 2 Auburn, 96-138

AUBURN, Ala. -- Returning to his native state of Alabama, senior All-American Rainer Kendrick (Birmingham, Ala.) captured the 200-yard butterfly to lead seventh-ranked University of Texas men's swimming and diving team in a 138-96 loss to second-ranked Auburn at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center on Thursday night.
Kendrick, the 2004 NCAA Champion in the 200-meter butterfly, earned the Longhorns their lone individual title of the evening, winning the 200-yard butterfly in 1:48.55, with Auburn's Eric Shanteau and Texas freshman Daniel Rohleder (Austin, Texas) finishing second and third, with times of 1:49.26 and 1:49.96, respectively.
After sophomore Garrett Weber-Gale (Fox Point, Wis.) posted a second-place performance in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.34, freshman Matthew McGinnis (Raleigh, N.C.) contributed his second runner-up performance of the meet, clocking 4:26.77 in the 500-yard freestyle. McGinnis, who posted a time of 1:36.58 in the 200-yard freestyle and finished second to Auburn's B.J. Jones in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles on Thursday, posted NCAA consideration marks in both events.
Auburn's Doug Van Wie, Sean Osborne Fred Bousquet and Ryan Wochomurka kicked the meet off with a time of 3:14.54 to win the 400 medley relay before Jones, Wochomurka, George Bovell and Bousquet capped off the meet with a 2:57.42 to win the night's final event, the 400 freestyle relay.
On the diving boards, Matt Bisordi (San Mateo, Calif.), the Big 12 Conference's December Diver of the Month, posted a score of 272.40 in the one-meter springboard. Auburn sophomore Steven Segerlin established the school record on the 1-meter, posting a 365.47. Segerlin also posted the top score on the 3-meter with a 327.67. Texas freshman Brian Smith (Carrollton, Texas) and Bisordi placed fourth (285.45) and fifth (246.82), respectively.
The Longhorns, who will continue their road trip and head to Athens, Ga. to face the 16th-ranked Bulldogs, will face its second Southeastern Conference opponent in as many meets, on Saturday, Jan. 15, at the Gabrielsen Natatorium. The meet begins at noon.
