Soccer drops 2-0 decision to Colorado

AUSTIN, Texas -- Despite holding a 14-8 edge in shots, including an 8-5 margin in the second half while controlling play, Texas could not overcome a pair of CU goals in the first 32 minutes of the match as Colorado held on for a 2-0 victory in front of 895 fans at Myers Stadium on Friday, Oct. 7.
Colorado (6-5-2, 3-2-0 Big 12) won for the fifth time in its last eight contests, while Texas (5-6-1, 2-3-0 Big 12) saw its two-game winning streak snapped with the loss as the Horns dropped only their second game in their last 19 home matches.
Allison Kidd put the Buffs up 1-0 in the 22nd minute when she took a feed from Nikki Keller and launched a high shot from the top corner of the 18-yard box that dipped over the top of Longhorns goalkeeper Dianna Pfenninger's (Sugar Land, Texas) head and into the far upper left corner of the net. Almost 10 minutes later in the 32nd minute, Fran Munnelly staked CU to a 2-0 lead when her shot from the top of the six-yard box deflected off a UT defender past Pfenninger and into the lower left corner of the goal.
Texas put increasing pressure on Colorado in the second half and outshot the Buffs, but CU's defense bunkered down and limited the Longhorns' quality scoring opportunities. Kelsey Carpenter (Allen, Texas) had two of UT's best scoring chances in the second half when she was able to break in behind the Colorado defense, but on both occurrences, her shots sailed high of the net and out of play. Sophomore Caitlin Kennedy (Euless, Texas) also had a late second-half cross just miss going inside the far post on an endline chance. Despite the constant possession and pressure, the Buffaloes defense held strong to preserve the shutout victory. While Colorado keeper Jessica Keller posted her fourth shutout of the season by making three saves on the evening, Pfenninger recorded one save in the loss.
Highlighting the UT offense was Carpenter, who led all players with four shots, while Carrie Schmit (La Mesa, Calif.) added three in the losing effort for the Horns. Kidd, meanwhile, led the Buffs attack with three shots of her own while netting her fourth goal of the year.
The Longhorns return to action on Sunday, Oct. 9, when they host Texas Tech in a 1 p.m. Central game presented by State Farm Life Insurance at Myers Stadium.
