AUSTIN, Texas -- Caitlin Kennedy scored twice and Ashley Foster tallied three assists to headline a six-goal attack in the second half that led Texas to a 6-0 victory over Texas Tech in front of 1,184 fans at Myers Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 9.
Behind the win, UT improved to 6-6-1 overall and 3-3-0 in Big 12 play, while the Red Raiders fell to 1-12-0 overall and 0-4-0 during league action.
Texas managed to outshoot Texas Tech by a 23-0 margin in the first period, but the Red Raiders turned in one team save and had starting goalkeeper Megan Knauss come up with seven saves to keep the match scoreless through 45 minutes of action. After the intermission, while UT again dominated time of possession, the Red Raiders managed to put their first shot of the game on goal with a breakaway chance from Priscilla Esquivel in the 55th minute, but Texas' Dianna Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas) made the first of her two stops of the afternoon to keep the score deadlocked at 0-0. Less than a minute later, Amy Burlingham (Costa Mesa, Calif.) put Texas on the board by finishing a feed into the box from Foster (Athens, Ga.) at 54:47 to stake the Horns to a 1-0 lead. The Longhorns then grabbed a 2-0 advantage in the 58th minute as Priscilla Fite (Irving, Texas) notched her second goal of the year after settling a rebound off a Julie Gailey (San Ramon, Calif.) shot and finding the back of the net. From there, Kennedy (Euless, Texas) punched in back-to-back scores before Jill Gilbeau (San Diego, Calif.) recorded her first career goal at 78:20 and Kelsey Carpenter (Allen, Texas) recorded her fourth goal of the year at 79:02 to give Texas a 6-0 lead. The Texas defense then held off a late flurry from Tech over the waning moments en route to sealing its fifth shutout victory of the year. While Pfenninger notched her second career shutout with the victory, Knauss shouldered the loss despite making 10 of the Red Raiders' 11 stops on the afternoon.
Pacing the Longhorns' attack, which fired a season-best 39 shots on the afternoon, was Kennedy, who took a game-best nine shots en route to notching her first career multi-goal game, Foster, who set a career-best with three assists, and Carpenter, who scored one goal and assisted on another. Texas Tech, meanwhile, had its offense led by leading scorer Kimmie Davis, who tallied four of the Red Raiders' five shots on the day. Of additional note for UT, the four-point afternoon for Kennedy also marked a career-best for the sophomore midfielder and gave the Horns' their first multi-goal game of the year for an individual player.
Up next, the Longhorns travel to Ames, Iowa, for a 7 p.m. Central match against the Iowa State Cyclones on Friday, Oct. 14.
