Baseball rallies for 7-6 win over UNLV

AUSTIN, Texas -- Seth Johnston (Boerne, Texas) came through with a RBI-single in front of a two-run home run off the bat of Taylor Teagarden (Carrollton, Texas) and a RBI-single from Chance Wheeless (Round Rock, Texas) with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning to key a four-run rally that sent No. 1 Texas (6-0) to a 7-6 victory over UNLV (1-4) in front of 4,307 fans at Disch-Falk Field on Saturday, Feb. 12. Of note, the win marked the Horns first victory in their last at bat since a 3-2 win over then-No. 3 Rice on April 13, 2004.
UNLV grabbed its first lead of the series in the top of the first as C.J. Lang reached on an error to begin the frame, advanced to third on a bloop single off the bat of Zeke Parraz and came in to score on a one-out, groundout from Tyler Beranek. The Horns attempted to answer immediately in the bottom of the inning by loading the bases with two outs on three walks, but Rebels' starter Derek Rodriguez induced a fly out to right field to end the threat. After UT was turned away in the second after putting two runners on, the Longhorns knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third when Calvin Beamon (Aurora, Colo.), who reached on a fielder's choice, stole second with two down and scored on a double to left from Carson Kainer (Tomball, Texas).
Texas starter Buck Cody (Oklahoma City, Okla.), who fanned four over 4.1 innings, then worked out of one-out jam in the top of the fourth before the Rebels reclaimed the lead in the top of the fifth as they loaded the bases on a triple by Zeke Zerega, a walk and a bunt single prior to a two-run double from Parraz, an RBI-groundout and a run-scoring single off the bat of Beranek to make it a 5-1 game. Looking to respond to UNLV's four-run fifth after a quiet fifth and sixth, the Longhorns received a two-run home run from Johnston with one out in the seventh to pull back within two at 5-3. Following a scoreless eighth for both sides, four walks and a sac fly for the Rebels in the top of the ninth made it a 6-3 ballgame before Texas came up in the bottom of the frame. Down to their final three outs, Drew Stubbs (Atlanta, Texas) reached on a leadoff error then proceeded to second on a wild pitch before Johnston singled through the middle to bring him home and pull UT back within two. Teagarden then came to the plate and, on the first pitch he saw, tied the game with a two-run home run to left. Still not done in the inning, Texas proceeded to load the bases on two walks and a one-out, bunt-single by Kainer before Wheeless delivered a single to right that brought home Bryan Herrera (Austin, Texas) from third with the game-winning run. Earning the win in relief was Stewart, who tossed one scoreless inning out of the bullpen for his second victory in as many days, while UNLV reliever Efren Navarro shouldered the loss.
Highlighting the Texas offense on the day was Teagarden, who went 3-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored that included his second home run of the year, Johnston, who extended his hitting streak to six games and also tallied his fifth straight multi-hit game with a 2-for-3 performance that included three RBI and two runs scored, and Kainer, who posted a pair of hits while tallying his fifth two-out RBI in the last four contests. Meanwhile, the Rebels were paced by Parraz, who collected two hits on the afternoon while driving in three runs and scoring another. Of additional note for UT, Stubbs extended his current hit streak to six contests and reliever Adrian Alaniz (Sinton, Texas) worked a career-best 3.2 frames while fanning four.
Texas will conclude its three-game series with UNLV at Disch-Falk Field on Sunday, Feb. 13. First pitch is scheduled for a 1 p.m. Central start.
