No. 3 Softball splits on Saturday at Palm Springs Classic

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. -- Every starting batter had either at least one hit or an RBI in No. 3 Texas' 8-2 victory over Loyola Marymount in the early game at the Palm Springs Classic on Saturday at the Big League Dreams park, but the Longhorns fell to No. 25 Long Beach State, 1-0 in 8.0 innings via the international tie-breaker, in the back end of the doubleheader.
Wynter Turner (San Pedro, Calif.) collected hits in both games, including a 2-for-4 effort with two RBI in the first game. She was one of three players to collect two hits against LMU, and one of two players with two RBI. Turner also broke up Long Beach pitcher Meredith Cervenka's no-hit bid in the fourth inning with an infield single in the second game.
Game One: No. 3 Texas 8, Loyola Marymount 2
Texas pushed three runs across the board in the first inning as MicKayla Padilla (Cedar Park, Texas) scored on a wild pitch before Desiree Williams (Tucson, Ariz.) blasted her first home run of the season to make the score, 2-0. Christina Gwyn (Keller, Texas) singled up the middle to drive in the third run of the inning. In the fourth, Texas scored four more runs as the Horns batted around. UT closed the scoring in the sixth when Turner's RBI single brought in Padilla from second. In the pitching circle, Amy Bradford (Lufkin, Texas) started and earned the win (2-0) against LMU going 4.0 innings and allowing just one hit with five strikeouts and no walks. She gave way to Gwyn in the fifth. who went on to finish the game. She surrendered two runs on five hits while striking out three. The Lions used three pitchers, as Krystal Kehr took the loss after giving up six runs in 2.0 innings.
Game Two: No. 25 Long Beach State 1, No. 3 Texas 0 - 8.0 innings
In a pitching duel, Cat Osterman (Houston, Texas) went the full 8.0 innings for Texas, but allowed the game-winning (unearned) run via the international tie-breaker rule (the last batter of the prior inning is placed on second base and the batting team has three outs to get her home) with one out in the top of the eighth. Melanie McCauly singled through the middle to bring in Lacy Tyler, who had been placed on second and sacrificed over with the first out. Texas got its runner - Lizi Sowers (Georgetown, Texas) - over to third, but was unable to bring her home. Osterman (3-2) surrendered two hits in the game while matching her season high with 17 strikeouts and walking one. Long Beach's Meredith Cervenka also went 8.0 innings in the circle, surrendering two hits while striking out nine and walking one, to take the win. Both pitchers had no-hitters going through the fourth inning. Turner and Monica Askew (Houston, Texas) had the two Texas hits.
