UT sweeps Youngstown State to give Augie Garrido 1,500 career victories

AUSTIN, Texas -- By scoring eight runs on 11 hits during each game and having five pitchers combine to allow only two runs while fanning 17 over 18 innings of work, No. 1 Texas (15-0) earned a doubleheader sweep of Youngstown State (1-4) with 8-0 and 8-2 victories Disch-Falk Field on Sunday, Feb. 27. Notably, the Longhorns not only equaled their best start since 1995 with 15 straight wins to open the 2005 campaign, but the first victory over the Penguins on Sunday marked the 1,500th career win for head coach Augie Garrido. Of additional note, the Longhorns took the series sweep after a 14-0 victory on Friday, Feb. 25.
In the first game, the Longhorns scored in each of the first three innings to jump out to a 5-0 lead as a run-scoring single from Taylor Teagarden (Carrollton, Texas) and a RBI-triple off the bat of Will Crouch (Austin, Texas) plated two runs in the first, three more hits brought in two more scores in the second, and a sac bunt with runners on the corners from Nick Peoples (Round Rock, Texas) in the third gave UT its fifth run of the game. Texas starter Kyle McCulloch (Houston, Texas), meanwhile, held the Penguins scoreless in the first three frames despite YSU collecting five hits over that span courtesy of two double plays and a strikeout with two runners on and two down in the third. Following a scoreless fourth, UT loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth on three walks before a Drew Stubbs (Atlanta, Texas) double and a groundout scored three runs to make an 8-0 ballgame. In the sixth, Youngstown State looked to break up the shutout bid as a two-out single from Dustin Thomas with two runners on looked to score Justin Banks from second base, but Peoples throw to Teagarden was in time for the final out of the inning. From there, McCulloch worked a scoreless seventh before being relieved by Clayton Stewart (Angleton, Texas), who fanned a career-high four batters, over the final two frames to close out the 8-0 win and give UT its fourth shutout of the season.
While McCulloch earned his third win of the season by striking out five over seven shutout innings to match his career long for innings pitched, YSU starter Kevin Libeg incurred the loss. Pacing the UT offense in the first game of the twinbill was the tandem of Seth Johnston (Boerne, Texas) and Teagarden, who each collected three hits while combining for two runs scored and three RBI. Youngstown State's attack, meanwhile, was headed by Brandon Caipen and Thomas, who each went 2-for-3 in Game #1.
During Game #2, the Penguins snapped the Horns' consecutive scoreless innings streak at 23.1 frames by plating a two-out run in the top of the first to grab a 1-0 advantage as a leadoff walk and singles by Caipen and Jim Phillips brought home YSU's first run of the series. Answering immediately in the bottom of the first, Texas managed to knot the score at 1-1 when Teagarden drew a two-out walk, moved to second on a balk and scored on a two-base throwing error. Two innings later, UT claimed a 2-1 lead when Teagarden again walked and came around to score on a throwing error with two outs that allowed him to score from first. Both offenses were then held off the board in the fourth and fifth innings before the Penguins put their first two runners on in the sixth, moved both into scoring position with a sac bunt and tied the contest at 2-2 with a RBI-base hit from Thomas. In the bottom of the inning, the Longhorns reclaimed the lead after loading the bases on two walks and a bunt single as Dooley Prince (Sulphur, La.) lifted a sacrifice fly to right to make it a 3-2 game.
The Penguins would threaten to tie the game for the third time on the afternoon in the seventh by placing two runners on with two outs, but J. Brent Cox (Bay City, Texas) fanned the first batter he faced in relief to end the inning and keep the Longhorns on top. Texas then tacked on four runs in the bottom of the seventh after loading the bases via three straight, one-out singles before Peoples came up with a fielder's choice groundout to plate one score that was followed by a Clay Van Hook (Brenham, Texas) run-scoring single, a wild pitch to bring in another run and a RBI-double off the bat of Prince to make it a 7-2 contest. While the Penguins would try to rally by putting on a pair of runners in the eighth, Cox induced a double-play grounder to keep YSU off the board. Texas, meanwhile, added an unearned run in the bottom of the inning to extend its lead to 8-2 before Cox worked a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the 8-2 win. Cody, who worked 1.2 innings in relief, earned his third win of the year as Cox notched his third save and Youngstown State starter Eric Shaffer shouldered the loss.
Headlining the UT offense in the second game was the tandem of Van Hook and David Maroul (Benbrook, Texas), who each posted a pair of hits, and Teagarden, who scored three runs during a 1-for-3 effort. YSU, meanwhile, was paced by Caipen, who went 2-for-2 with one run scored, and Banks, who tallied a pair of hits. Of additional note for Texas, Stubbs extended his current hit streak to 15 games with at least one base hit in each contest of the doubleheader, and Adrian Alaniz (Sinton, Texas) hurled a career-long five innings while fanning four opposing batters in his first career start during Game #2.
Up next, the Longhorns travel to Tucson, Ariz., to face No. 7 Arizona in a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 4 at 8 p.m. Central.
