Boone strikes out eight in Baseball's 13-5 win over San Diego State

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Eight of the Longhorns' nine starters collected at least one hit on the day to fuel a 13-hit attack and sophomore Randy Boone (Yoakum, Texas) fanned a career-best eight in his first start of the season to lead No. 1 Texas (2-0) to a 13-5 victory over San Diego State (0-2) in front of a crowd of 2,353 at Tony Gwynn Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 5.
After both sides stranded a runner in the first inning, San Diego State strung together three consecutive one-out singles in the bottom of the second, including an RBI-base hit off the bat of Jordan Swaydan with runners on the corners, to jump out to a 1-0 lead. Immediately responding in the top of the third, Texas tied the score at 1-1 when Clay Van Hook (Brenham, Texas) singled with one out for his first career hit, moved to third on a base hit to right from Dooley Prince (Sulphur, La.) and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Drew Stubbs (Atlanta, Texas). One inning later, the Longhorns sent nine men to the plate and capitalized on two SDSU errors with six base hits, including a two-run single with the bases loaded from Robby Hudson (Redlands, Calif.), to plate six runs and take a 7-1 advantage. Taylor Teagarden (Carrollton, Texas) then connected on the Longhorns' first home run of the year to lead off the top of the fifth before Will Crouch (Austin, Texas) connected on his first career round-tripper with one runner on to stake UT to a 10-1 lead two batters later.
Continuing to battle back, the Aztecs would scratch across an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth and receive a solo home run from Tim O'Brien in the sixth before scoring two more times in the seventh via a two-run single from Brock Ungricht to cut the Texas lead in half at 10-5. Looking to stem the late San Diego State surge, the Horns plated a pair of two-out runs in the top of the eighth on the strength of two singles, two stolen bases, an error, a wild pitch and an RBI-double by Seth Johnston (Boerne, Texas) to pull in front by a score of 12-5. While UT added another unearned run in the ninth to make it 13-5 in favor of the Horns, Adrian Alaniz (Sinton, Texas) worked two scoreless frames against SDSU in which he fanned six to seal the win. Earning the victory was Boone, who allowed only one earned run on six hits over five innings in the start, while SDSU starter Brett Douglas incurred the loss.
Six Longhorns, including Prince and Stubbs who each collected three hits, turned in multiple-hit afternoons to pace the offense while Boone, Kenn Kasparek (Weimar, Texas) and Alaniz combined for 15 strikeouts on the day to lead the Horns. Other significant notables for the Texas offense on the day were Teagarden, who went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI, Crouch, who posted a pair of hits while scoring twice and driving in three and Robby Hudson (Redlands, Calif.), who not only scored twice and tallied two RBI but also posted a pair of hits. San Diego State, meanwhile, had its attack led by James Guerrero, who went 2-for-3 with one run scored, and O'Brien, who turned in a two-hit day that included one run scored and one RBI.
Up next, the Horns and Aztecs wrap up their three-game, season-opening series with a 3 p.m. Central finale on Sunday, Feb. 6.
