Iowa State outlasts Men's Basketball in overtime

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Tasheed Carr scored 13 points in overtime and Iowa State ended a 28-game road losing streak in the Big 12 with a 92-80 win over No. 20 Texas on Saturday.
The Cyclones got their first league road win in nearly four years after Will Blalock sent it into overtime with a short shot in the lane that tied it at 68 with 37 seconds left.
Carr took over from there. He opened the extra period with a 3-pointer from the left corner, followed it with another from the right and put back his own miss to make it 78-74.
Blalock hit two straight buckets and Carr hit two free throws and converted a 3-point play that made it 87-76 and sent the Texas fans heading for the exits.
Iowa State (11-8, 3-5) got its first road win in the Big 12 since beating Kansas State on Feb. 21, 2001. The losing skid started in its following game, in Austin.
The Cyclones have now won three in a row after dropping six straight in January. Iowa State ended that losing skid with a home win over No. 14 Oklahoma.
Carr finished with 22 points, Blalock had 15 and Curtis Stinson scored 17 for the Cyclones, who had six players score in double figures.
Daniel Gibson scored 23 to lead Texas (15-6, 4-4) and Brad Buckman had 20 points and 15 rebounds. But Buckman missed a free throw that would have given the Longhorns a three-point cushion with 49 seconds left before Blalock's tying shot.
Buckman had also missed a layup as the shot clock was winding down when Texas held a 67-63 lead.
Texas tried to hold the ball for a last shot in regulation, but Blalock tied up Gibson in the final seconds and forced a turnover.
Carr, who had made just seven 3-pointers all year, hit one on the first possession of overtime and Jared Homan followed it with a dunk that immediately set the tone for the final five minutes.
Iowa State, the worst 3-point shooting team in the Big 12 this season at 28 percent, hit 8-of-16 against Texas.
The Longhorns, meanwhile, one of the league's best teams from long range, was 6-of-30 and missed all five 3-pointers in overtime. Gibson and Buckman combined for just six points in the extra session.
Texas has lost three of its last four games since losing leading scorer P.J. Tucker for the season because of academic problems.

ON THE GAME: Whatever happens in a game, you always have to find a way to finish. We had the game at one point, but we did not close it out. One thing we know is that you cannot turn the ball over. But it was not just one play that hurt us. Five-second calls were big, missed lay-ups hurt and missed free-throws are an issue. What it really came down to was that they scored points at the end of the game. We have got to work on finishing our games.
ON "MAN" DEFENSE: During the game we switched from zone defense to man. I felt like we were not aggressive. We needed to mix it up in order to be less passive. We made the adjustments, but they changed their mindset too.
ON DANIEL GIBSON: I've got to tip my hat to Daniel. He played 45 minutes in this game and we even had to take some time-outs to help him rest. He really played his heart out.

ON THE GAME: I think we played the way we wanted to for the first 36 minutes. The last four minutes we made a lot of mental mistakes. Their guards are good. Coach Barnes told us they would come out and get in the paint. Coach told us we have to learn what to do when it comes to crunch time and get the shots that we want.
ON THE NEXT GAMES: We can't hang our heads. We need to come together as a team. We had this game in our hands, but we have to learn how to finish games and be able to execute down the stretch.

ON THE GAME: I guess you could say we are still young, but that's not really it. They were really hot. It is hard to stop a hot team in overtime. They knocked down a lot of shots. It's like a dagger in your heart when they just keep knocking down shots.
ON THE REST OF THE SEASON: It is not good to lose at home and it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. We're going to come back. I'm sure we'll learn from this game and bounce back. We'll watch film tomorrow, fix what we did wrong and try to make a run in the Big 12.

ON THE VICTORY: I would like to give credit to a very good Texas team who played a great game tonight. In terms of our team, it was the best and most consistent game we have played on the road. We have not won a road game in a long time so our kids were ecstatic. I thought Texas played a great game which made this such a sweet win for us.
ON IOWA STATE'S PLAY: I thought my team played with great heart and never gave up. They kept playing at times they may have been tempted to stop. We had to adjust to Texas because they are bigger than us, but it was just a great win.

ON OVERTIME: I played with confidence. I refused to lose. I wanted to do anything to help my team win. I was willing to take big shots. Opening with the three in overtime was huge for our confidence and it got us on a roll. I was glad we worked as a team and pulled out a win.

ON IOWA STATE: We are on a little bit of a run. We have confidence. We stepped it up in overtime in order to win. I think we played the best we could in overtime. I am just happy to finally have a road win.
