Softball earns extra-inning victory over No. 7 UCLA

LOS ANGELES -- Amber Hall (Deer Park, Texas) singled to center field with one out and a runner on third, bringing in MicKayla Padilla (Cedar Park, Texas) to stake Texas to a 1-0 lead in the eighth inning, and Cat Osterman (Houston, Texas) didn't allow a run in the bottom of the frame as the fifth-ranked Texas softball team defeated seventh-ranked UCLA, 1-0, in 8.0 innings at the Bruins' Easton Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. The Longhorns spoiled the grand reopening of the Bruins home facility, which had undergone a renovation in the off-season.
Texas (19-3) won its second game of the year against UCLA (16-6) and the second game of the teams' eight game series history.
After a scoreless regulation seven innings, the two teams decided the game with the international tie break, where the last batter of the previous inning is placed on second base and the batting team has three outs to bring her home. Padilla pinch ran for Alexis Garcia (Covina, Calif.) and moved to third on Tina Boutelle's (Katy, Texas) sacrifice, before rounding for home on Hall's hit to center.
Osterman (9-2) earned the win, going 4.2 innings in relief, allowing one hit while striking out 10 and walking one.
Texas got two runners right off the bat in the first as both Tina Boutelle (Katy, Texas) and Hall bunted their way on, but UCLA hurler Angelica Selden strung together three straight outs to end the threat.
UCLA got its own runner right away the next half-inning as Caitlen Beyni drew a walk from Texas starter Meagan Denny (Crowley, Texas). After a pop up, Jodie Legaspi hit into a fielder's choice to get Benyi out at second, and Denny silenced the threat by striking out Emily Zaplatosch to end the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, UCLA got two base runners with only one out as Denny walked Krista Colburn and Kristen Dedmon. Cat Osterman (Houston, Texas) entered in relief, striking out the next two batters to end the inning as the Bruins stranded both runners at first and second.
UCLA got its first hit of the game in the bottom of the sixth when Zaplatosch singled off Osterman, but the Bruins didn't muster any more offense in the inning.
Denny made the start, going 3.1 hitless innings, surrendering six walks and no runs in the no-decision.
Selden tossed the complete game, allowing one run (unearned) on five hits while striking out 11 and walking none. She took her second loss of the season against Texas and moved to 10-3 overall on the year.
The Longhorns return to action on Thursday, May 17, when they take on No. 21 Florida State and No. 1 Arizona on the first day of the Kia Klassic, hosted by Cal State Fullerton.
