Softball sweeps midweek doubleheader from UT-Arlington

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Christina Gwyn's (Keller, Texas) RBI single in the fourth inning, combined with Cat Osterman's (Houston, Texas) one-hitter, gave the Longhorns a 1-0 win in the first game of the doubleheader, and a four-run inning and a five-run inning led UT to a 9-0 run-rule victory in the nightcap, as the fourth-ranked Texas softball team earned a doubleheader sweep of UT-Arlington on Wednesday at UTA's Allan Saxe Field.
After connecting for just two hits in the first game, Texas (12-2) exploded in the second game with a four-run third inning and a five-run fifth inning to post the run-rule victory over the Mavericks (6-10) in the second game. Texas used its 13th and 14th different lineups of the season in the doubleheader.
With her seventh strikeout of the afternoon in the first game, Osterman broke the Big 12 Conference career strikeout record, supplanting Oklahoma State's Lauren Bay (2000-03), who graduated with 1,151 strikeouts. She also jumped up four places on the NCAA Div. I career strikeout list, from No. 16 to No. 12, and now has 1,157 on her two-plus year career. She is six strikeouts short of 11th place (Trinity Johnson, South Caroline/Cal State Fullerton, 2000-03, 1,163 strikeouts).
Desiree Williams (Tucson, Ariz.) scored three runs on the night as she reached base three times via walks. Rachael Cool (Anna, Texas) connected for a pair of doubles in her two at-bats in the second game with two RBI, while Wynter Turner (San Pedro, Calif.) went 2-for-3 in the second game with two RBI.
Game 1: No. 4 Texas 1, UT-Arlington 0
After Williams walked to open the fourth inning and moved to second on Turner's sacrifice hit, Gwyn put UT on the board when her single to centerfield brought Desiree Williams from second. April Clougherty broke up Osterman's no-hit bid with two outs in the sixth inning when she bunted for single. For the game, Osterman (5-2) went the full 7.0 innings, allowing one hit while striking out 14, while walking none. UTA's Jill Garro (3-6) also threw the complete game, allowing two hits while striking out five and walking three. Of note, all nine of UTA's batter in the first inning bunted - no one swung the bat - resulting in two ground outs and seven "swinging" strikeouts when the bunts landed foul.
Game 2: No. 4 Texas 9, UT-Arlington 0 (5 inn.)
With two outs in the third inning, UT jumped on Mavericks starter Lauren Hebert for four runs with two outs. MicKayla Padilla (Cedar Park, Texas) put down a bunt single, then came home on Tina Boutelle's (Katy, Texas) double to right center. Amber Hall (Deer Park, Texas) then followed with a single to left field that scored Boutelle, and after Williams walked, Turner smacked a two-RBI triple to center field to push the score to 4-0. Texas then put five more runs on the board in the fifth as the team capitalized on a pair of Maverick fielding errors. Williams led off with a one-out walk and Turner singled before an outfield fielding error on Jacqueline Williams' (Arlington, Texas) fly ball to left field plated both runners. At the next at-bat, Lizi Sowers' (Georgetown, Texas) sacrifice bunt ended up as yet another runner for Texas as the throw to first sailed over the first baseman's head and brought in Jacqueline Williams from second and pushed Sowers to second. After Alexis Garcia (Covina, Calif.) earned her second walk in as many at-bats, Cook smacked her second double in as many at-bats to plate Sowers and Garcia and push the score to 9-0. Amy Bradford (3-0) earned the win after going 4.0 innings, allowing four hits and striking out three while walking one. UTA's Lauren Hebert took the loss after surrendering five runs (four earned) in 4.2 split innings of work, while Nicki Wilson went 0.1 and giving up four runs (two earned) on one hit.
