AUSTIN, Texas -- Sophomore pitcher Randy Boone (Yoakum, Texas) hurled a career-best seven innings while striking out seven en route to helping No. 4 Texas (22-4, 1-3 Big 12) tally its first conference win of the year with a 7-3 victory over No. 19 Texas Tech (17-7, 2-2 Big 12) on Thursday, March 24 in front of 5,015 fans at Disch-Falk Field. Additionally, the Texas offense scored seven runs during the first three innings in the win while registering 10 or more hits for the 15th time in 26 games.
The Longhorns jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first when Seth Johnston (Boerne, Texas) singled up the middle, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Thomas Incaviglia's (Monterey, Calif.) RBI-single with two outs. In the second, with two runners on and one out, second baseman Robby Hudson (Redlands, Calif.) came up with a RBI-base hit in front of a run-scoring bunt-single off the bat of Drew Stubbs (Atlanta, Texas) to stake the Longhorns to a 3-0 advantage. An errant pickoff throw in the same frame then allowed Hudson to cross the plate and push UT's lead to 4-0. One inning later, right fielder Calvin Beamon (Aurora, Colo.) tripled with one out and scored on a Carson Kainer (Tomball, Texas) RBI-single, which pushed Texas' advantage to 5-0. David Maroul (Benbrook, Texas) then followed with a double to left field to drive in Beamon before Hudson's second hit in as many at bats made it a 7-0 contest.
Texas Tech, meanwhile, was limited to three hits over the first three innings by Boone, but managed to scratch across a run in the fourth on an RBI-groundout from Joseph Callender, making the score 7-1. After the Red Raiders worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the fifth, a single by Cameron Blair and a two-out infield hit from Callender in the sixth cut the UT lead to 7-2. The score remained that way until Texas Tech plated another run in the bottom of the ninth to make it a 7-3 game, but reliever Buck Cody (Oklahoma City, Okla.) induced a strikeout to end the game and cap the win. Boone, who matched his career-high for innings pitched with seven, allowed only two runs on seven hits en route to notching his fourth victory of the year, while Red Raiders' starter Billy Carnline shouldered the loss.
Texas' offensive attack, which pounded out 12 hits on the night, was led by Kainer, who collected two hits and scored twice, and Hudson, who went 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI. Additionally, Chance Wheeless (Round Rock, Texas) and Beamon also posted a pair of hits for the Longhorns while Johnston extended his current hit streak to 10 games. On the other side of the ledger, Texas Tech was led by Blair, who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Chris Williams, who registered two hits, and reliever Fielding Lewis, who surrendered only one hit over three innings of work.
The Longhorns and Red Raiders continue this series at Disch-Falk Field on Friday, March 25 at 2:30 p.m. Central.
